Roy H. Doi

1933 - 2017

March 26, 1933 - October 9, 2017 Roy H. Doi, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular Biology at the University of California, Davis, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 84, on October 9, 2017. Roy is survived by his wife Joan, his children Kathryn (Jim Gold) and Douglas (Amelia Rosales) and grandchildren Tara Ohrtman and Cristina, Caroline, and Calan Doi. He is also survived by his stepchildren Craig (Charlotte), Vicki (John), Karyn (Jeff), Sheryl (Dave), and many more grandchildren. Roy was born in Sacramento, California, on March 26, 1933, and grew up in Loomis, California. His parents had immigrated from Japan in the early 1900's and worked as migrant farm laborers to support their family of six children. Roy was a faculty member in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Department at U.C. Davis for over 40 years. Roy will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity, his humility, his compassion, his avid support for the Cal football team, the 49ers and the Dodgers, his love of the arts, and his love of travel. He will be greatly missed by his family and his colleagues in the scientific community here. A memorial service for Roy will be held at the Putah Creek Lodge on the U.C. Davis campus on Saturday, November 11, at noon (doors to open at 11:30).
