Lee Kershner Obituary

Lee G. Kershner October 3, 1928-January 31, 2016

Mrs. Kershner is survived by her children, Vlae Kershner (Jacquie), Menlo Park, CA and, Tempra Wilson (Daniel), Meridian, ID; grandchildren, Christopher, Katrina and Kailen Kershner; cousins, V. Gilbert Beers, Elgin, IL and Karen Cord Taylor, Boston, MA.

Mrs. Kershner was born in Chicago and spent happy summers in Vermillion County, Ill. After moving to Las Cruces in 1997 to enjoy the year-round sunshine, Lee encountered the vibrant Hispanic culture which had been ignored in U S history books. She was especially impressed with the citizens of Mesilla who had managed to preserve their heritage with pride and dignity maintaining a small town ambiance that was similar to the small towns in Illinois where she had spent much of her childhood. Her profound desire was for more Hispanics to research and develop their unique contributions in the settlement of our great country's melting pot. Arrangements have been entrusted to La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home.

Lee Kershner's daughter, Tempra was my best childhood best friend; I recall that Lee Kershner's house always had an ambiance that I wished my house had, with quiet classical music but with four children, my house never seemed quiet. Shortly before her death, she returned to Highland Park, Illinois and knocked on my mother's door. She spent a lovely afternoon visiting with my mother, but the two apparently failed to exchange the addresses so I could easily contact either Tempra or Vlae. I had tried to contact Tempra several times over the years but without success and would still like to reestablish contact.

Lee was a talented keeper of family stories. I still miss talking with her -- mostly by phone.

The memories of summer and wading across the Des Plaines River to visit Tempra and enjoy the welcome that was always afforded those of us who came over to play came flooding back as I read Vlae's piece. Your mom was a unique and special lady and my heart is with you both at this difficult time.

Thank you Karen for the remembrance...Mother did everything just the way she wanted, right up to the end.

Lee lived life well right up to her final days. She was always the spark that lit the fire in the family. All my older relatives told me I was like her, and I hope that is true.
