Irene Marshall Obituary

Irene Marshall, 91, passed away Jan. 2, 2016, at her home with her loving family surrounding her with abundant love and surrender to eternal life in Heaven. Irene was born Irene Hope Elliott on Feb. 10, 1924, in Portales, New Mexico, to Robert Henry and Goldie Vica (Porter) Elliott. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers John Henry Elliott, Wayne Elliott; and a sister, Natalie Olmsted; her son Elliott Marshall; daughter, Margaret Marshall; and grandson Rodney Marshall. On Sept. 12, 1942, she married Wayne Franklin Marshall in Portales. Wayne preceded her in death. Surviving are their children, Robert Marshall, Omar Marshall and Phyllis Inman and her husband, Hoyt Inman, of Las Cruces. Also surviving are her eight siblings. Additionally, Irene had 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Irene also left behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Irene lived most of her young life in eastern New Mexico, where she completed high school. She then moved with her family to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where she completed two years of college while raising her family. Irene had many adventures in her life, she prided herself in having such a large, loving Christian family, she and Wayne loved to fish, grow vegetables, can and preserve foods, and collect arrowheads, they walked many miles in the New Mexico desert looking for treasures. The highlight of her year was always the annual family reunion. This is when she shared stories, cooked goodies, spent time with her siblings and all of the Elliott Clan. This was also when she showed her strong talent in the Skillet Throw, the true Elliott sport. Irene was an avid quilter, seamstress, reader, and enjoyed growing and tending to flowers. Her favorite flower was the iris. Irene thought her greatest legacy was her children, grandchildren, and great- and great-great-grandchildren. Irene loved dogs and you would find one of her Pekingese dogs by her feet as she sat to read, do crossword puzzles, or while working on her table top puzzles with her sons. Most importantly, Irene lived her life as a strong Christian woman. She always lived her life with true Christian example. Family and friends may attend her services officiated by her pastor, David Stewart, at Getz Funeral Home 1410 East Bowman, Las Cruces, Jan. 6, 2015, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow the service at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho Ave.. Las Cruces. A gathering will follow at the home of Phyllis and Hoyt Inman, 1041 Banegas Road, Las Cruces, NM. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Marshall, Eric Inman, Richard Marshall, Marcus Chormicle, Carlos Chormicle, Michael Leach, and Steven Austin.
