Fred Sazynski

Sazynski, Fred Fred passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 31, 2011, at the age of 83, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 61 years, Ethel; daughter-in-law Darcee; parents Eva and John; sisters Emma, Anne and Mary; brothers Peter and Bill. Left to cherish his rich memories are his children, Judy (Lyle) Seed, Fred (Judy Richardson); grandchildren and great-grandchildren Clay (Angie) Kaleb and Lexi; Michael (Candace) and Lily; Laryssa and Zoe; sister Hilda, and several nieces, nephews and extended family. Fred was born on July 14, 1927, in Earl Grey, SK. After a brief stay in Sedley, he and his family settled in Regina Beach when he was a teenager. By age 16, he took his hard working philosophy to the railroad where he helped expand the railway bridge infrastructure across much of southern Saskatchewan. Once his own family was established, he utilized his carpentry skills and ingenuity to build many houses and cottages along the shores of Last Mountain Lake, which are still enjoyed by many families today. During this time, Fred also served as a volunteer firefighter at Regina Beach for 35 years, many of these years as the Fire Chief. He continued his passion for building as opportunities presented themselves, even at age 80, when he showed up ready to help his grandson Clay build his house. Everyone who met Fred soon became captivated by his tall, often embellished stories that seemed to grow in detail with each passing year. His infectious personality and sharp sense of humor made him a pleasure to be around. He was happiest when surrounded by family, especially when the family gatherings included a meal. His insatiable appetite marveled those in attendance which always led to more of his storytelling. From a young age, Fred loved spending time outdoors enjoying mother-nature, especially hunting and fishing. This was something he instilled in his family, especially his grandson Clay, with whom he shared a special bond which developed through countless hours in the fields or on the lake. It was during these outdoor times that Fred shared his poetic talents with his son and grandchildren as he recited an endless collection of poems and limericks. While he loved hunting and fishing, he treasured the social component of these activities the most. It was not uncommon for him to have a handful of people lined up around his ice fishing shack to hear his stories or listen to good natured jokes and comments. Besides hunting, Fred spent many hours feeding and nurturing his beloved squirrels and birds that visited his house every day. Throughout his entire life, Fred was always jovial and never complained, not even after his terminal diagnosis and subsequent treatments. He epitomized the care-free glass half-full attitude which inspired everyone he met. Our family wishes to thank all the staff at the Regina Pasqua Hospital, especially those in Unit 3D and Palliative Care for their caring support. At Freds request, a private memorial will be held. Flowers are gratefully declined, but those wishing to do so may make a donation in Freds name to the Palliative Care Unit. Arrangements have been entrusted to Speers Funeral and Cremation Services, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK.
