Lloyd Barber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 19 to Sep. 20, 2011.
DR. LLOYD BARBER C.C., S.O.M., B.A., B.Comm., M.B.A., Ph.D, L.L.D., Hon. CA. Dr. Lloyd Ingram Barber passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Regina Beach SK on September 16, 2011 at the age of 79. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 55 years, Duna. He will be fondly remembered by his children: Muir (Debbie Winkler) of Regina Beach and his children Carolyn (Darryl Wolfe), Elizabeth and Michael; Brian (Bonnie) of Regina Beach and their children Bryn, Jillian, Brett, Kaytlyn, Suzanne, Lynn and Burke; Kathy (Jim Thomson) of Kamloops BC and their children Ryan (Denise), Greg, Chad and Steven; David (Janet) of Regina Beach and their children Adam, Robert and Jon; Susan (Gary Benson) of Regina and their children Keith (Elizabeth and daughters McKenzie and Meija), Scott, Marni, Brett, Laura and John (Amber); Patti (Bern Leonard) of Cypress, Texas and their children Duke, Susan, Gordon and Bridgette; as well as his sister, Ada Lou Watson of Regina Beach. Lloyd was predeceased by his grandson, Douglas and his brother, Lorne. Lloyd was born in Regina and raised at Regina Beach, attending school there and at Luther College in Regina. He married Duna in 1956 and together they raised six children. Never shying away from adventure, Lloyd and Duna traveled the world extensively but always remained deeply rooted at Regina Beach. Lloyd was overheard saying that of all the places in the world, there was no place like his home at Trails End, in Regina Beach. His greatest pleasure was entertaining and being entertained by family and friends at the Lake. His proudest legacy is his six children and twenty-seven grandchildren. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Saskatchewan before pursuing graduate studies at the University of California (Berkeley) and the University of Washington where he obtained his Ph.D. Lloyd joined the faculty of the University of Saskatchewan as an instructor in 1955 and became Dean of Commerce in 1966 and later Vice President of the University. He was named President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Regina in 1976, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1990. Lloyd was an outstanding leader not only in education but also in business and native issues. He held many corporate directorships including CP Limited, Husky Oil, Bank of Nova Scotia, Teck Cominco, Molson Limited, Can West Global and the Winnipeg Commodities Exchange. He served as President of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and on the executive council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. He was a founding member of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. In 1967, he was appointed to the North West Territorial Council and later served as the Indian Claims Commissioner of Canada from 1969 to 1977. He was awarded the Vanier Medal in 1979 by the Institute of Public Administration of Canada. He became Honorary Saskatchewan Indian Chief Little Eagle in 1980 and in 1985 received the Aboriginal Order of Canada. Lloyd was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1976 and then, in 1993, he was promoted to the Companion of the Order of Canada. In 1995 he was invested as a member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. Lloyd made a remarkable contribution to the social, economic and cultural life of Canada, Saskatchewan and the aboriginal people of our country. The pursuit of knowledge was his favourite pastime. He always had a keen interest in history and current affairs and he loved a good, rational debate. His love of life could be seen in everything he did: from waterskiing to parasailing, to gardening and sailing. His generous spirit, quick wit and wonderful sense of humour will always be cherished by those who knew him. Memorial Service will be held at the University of Regina, Centre for Kinesiology, Health, and Sport main gymnasium (gym 3) on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Bryan Hillis officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Regina Beach. In lieu of flowers, the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation will be the recipient of your contributions in Lloyd's memory. Dear Duna and the Barber family: Phil and I send our deepest and most sincere condolances to you all. We feel privileged to have known LLoyd even as little as we did, and remember how we looked forward to having both him and Duna at our table, either in Regina or at Sun Peaks. Duna and Barber Family,

I just heard of your loss and I am truely sorry. I remember the countless weekends in the summers when you took me in as part of the family - some of my fondest memories. Always treated as one of the family (even remember a few stinky jobs :>) - small payment for the freindship and hospitallity shown. I will be thinking of you and will miss Lloyd's dry and edgy wit.
All my Best,

Cleaver (or as Lloyd might say Spike!)

To the Barber family:
You will already know that Lloyd touched the lives of thousands of people and his influence on them was often profound. Lloyd interviewed me for a temporary teaching position at the College of Commerce. I'm sure that neither of us knew that it would last 37 years.

Dear Duna and all the family,

My condolences and prayers. Lloyd was a wonderful friend to all of us at Campion, a wise and generous guide and strength. May he rest in peace and may you be comforted in your grief.

Dear Duna & family,

I didn't know Lloyd well but I knew of his substantial contributions to the UofR and to the well-being of First Nations people in SK. I never thought to remind him that we were both members of a Grad class at the UofS back in the '50's. Stirling McDowell of STF fame was also a member of that class. It doesn't seem so long ago, yet they are both now gone. I trust that you, Duna and Susan, will continue to be part of life at the UofR. May your many friends and family sustain you at this difficult time. Much sympathy, Verda Petry

I was one of Lloyd's first students in the College of Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan. I always looked forward to his lectures.
Later I served on several boards with him. He performed the role of independent corporate director superbly and was tremendous fun to work with.
Duna, please accept condolences from Margaret and me.

Lloyd's family

Let me share my sympathy on the passing of your husband, father, and grandfather. Lloyd was a remarkable man! I got to know him when I attended U of S and with Howard Nixon and Lloyd we reestablished the Huskies Football team. Lloyd made all the financial arrangements and motivated the Administration and Management at the U of S to support this valuable asset! I know that Howard, Lloyd, and I take great pleasure in the success the Huskies have had over the years.

Duna and Family - I am saddened to hear of Lloyd's passing. I had the honour of working with Dr. Barber when I served as President of the Students' Union and as a member of the Board of Governors and Senate. During a difficult period of spending restraint, I always respected Lloyd and his belief that he was acting for the greater good of the University. I learned a lot from him (including his approach to University governance and his use of beer to douse flare-ups on the barbecue!). While I never took one of his classes, I can say first hand that he was an excellent teacher. He was truly one of the builders of modern Saskatchewan and leaves among his many legacies two great post secondary institutions and a major contribution to the status of First Nations and Aboriginal peoples in Canada! Please accept my deepest condolences. Sean Caragata

Duna and Family:

Sharon and I can never forget the years of happiness at the U. of S. after Lloyd hired Howard in 1966. Lloyd was a champion for all he worked with. Canada is a much better place for his efforts. He will not be soon forgotten for his "bigger than life" approach to universities, aboriginal people, the CPR and the Bank of Nova Scotia. He was a friend that we will never forget. Our life has been better for Lloyd and Duna's friendship and help.

Dear Duna and family,
We were saddened to hear of Lloyd's passing but so grateful to have seen him just this past summer. He was doing what he loved best....out on your boat, but anchored for a shore lunch with his entire family. May memories of happy times ease your pain. He made Saskatchewan a better place and his contributions will be remembered forever. Sincerely, Denise and Wally Blasidell, Calgary

Dear Duna and Family,

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in your time of loss. Lloyd was so many things to so many people and so many will share the loss. Three generations of my family recognized Lloyd and his family as being friendly, kind, thoughtful, and always ready to lend a hand. I admired Lloyd greatly and always enjoyed my conversations with him – always sharp in his thinking, witty in delivery and just a real joy to be around. His wisdom and kindness meant a lot to me.

Dr. Barber was one of my favorite professors while a student at the University of Saskatchewan. He was fabulous Dean and in what then the College of Commerce and a superb Vice-President. He always had the time to say hello and ask how things were.

I remember seeing him at the University of Regina in the 1980's, he remembered me and we had a great visit catching up on what people were doing and talking about old times at the University of Saskatchewan. I still have vivid memories of that visit and meeting at the old University of Regina Gymnasium.

He was a true supporter of Saskatchewan.

To The Barber Family,
Sympathy to all your family. Your father inspired me because he truely knew the history & supported the First Nations People. He acknowledged First Nations Culture & Traditions in such a respectful manner. He understood the close realtionship to Creator. He encouraged First Nations people to continue furthering their education & be proud to be Native. He had a pure spirit that connected to Creator through history and culture. May the Creator watch over you & your families bringing peace & comfort.
