EDWIN SCHINDLER Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post from Jan. 29 to Jan. 30, 2014.
SCHINDLER, Edwin (Ed)
Edwin (Ed) Schindler of Regina, SK passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2014 seventeen days shy of his 81st birthday. Ed was predeceased by his parents Gustav and Johanna Schindler; sister Ilona in infancy; formally of Hubbard and Fort Qu'Appelle, SK; nephew Marc Schindler of Spruce Grove, AB; brother-in- law Edward Schultz of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK; father-in-law and mother-in-law Alfred and Lenora Haynes of Qu'Appelle, SK. Ed is survived by Edith, his wife of 55 years; three sons, Kurt (Sandy) of Broadview, SK, grandsons Benjamin and Brenden; Kim of Regina and Kevin (Brenda) of Regina; granddaughter Cheyenne; daughter Kathleen (Craig) Weir, of Emburn, ON; grandchildren Rebecca, Alexander, Jessica and Nolan; brother Albert (Pam) of Cardston, Alberta; sister Evelyn Schultz of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK and numerous nieces and nephews in Saskatchewan and AB. Ed was born February 12, 1933 at Hubbard, SK. He attended school in Hubbard; farmed with his parents; belonged to the Baby Beef Club, played hockey, curled, played ball, until he contracted polio during the 1950's epidemic. He spent a number of months in the Regina General Hospital, then returned to the farm. Thanks to the provincial government of the day, he was fortunate to be one of the polio victims to receive financial assistance which enabled him to come to Regina for physical therapy and was enrolled in accounting and business training. He was subsequently employed in the accounting department of Ramsay Construction. He continued to work for the company until he was physically unable to attend the workplace. Ed was active in the community: one of the founding members of the Glencairn Community Association; served as board member and treasurer of his church and served for a number of years on the Regina Public Library Board. He loved gardening and wood working. When he could no longer pursue these activities he tried his hand at water colour and oil painting and researching his family history. It became necessary for Ed to move into Long Term Care; first to Parkside Nursing Home and then for the past two months he was a resident at the Regina Lutheran Home. Donations in Ed's memory may be made to a charitable organization of your choice. There will be no funeral. However, family and friends are welcome to attend the interment of Ed's ashes at Regina Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hwy #1 East, Regina, SK on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Jim Balfour officiating. Please meet on the service road prior to interment. Following the interment (approximately 2:45 p.m.) 'old' friends and neighbours are invited to join us at a reception being held at Broadway United Church, 105 Broadway Avenue, Regina – for a 'trip or two down memory lane'. Family and friends are invited to sign the online obituary and tributes page at www.regina-memorial.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home (306) 789-8850.

Dear Edith and families, Oh I am so sad and sorry when I saw that Ed had passed away. My mom also just passed on Feb 27th so I can imagine your grieving. I wrote a letter in Dec and now know that it would have been impossible for him to reply. I cherish each one of the letters that I received from you. I will write you more later. Sincere sympathy to the Schindler family. It is so hard to lose a parent, but may your love and memories of your Dad bring you comfort in the coming days. Hard working hands are now at rest. Thoughts and prayers are with you Kurt, Sandy and family.

Edith and Family --
In the days and weeks that follow,
Perhaps you'll often find
That even long-lost memories
Will slip into your mind,
And suddenly your loved one
Won't seem so far from you…
You'll think of touching stories,
The things you used to do,
And favorite family moments
In which you both took part –
These souvenirs of happy times
Will keep you close in heart.
