Robert HOLMES Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Apr. 19, 2018.
HOLMES, Robert E. October 5, 1945 - April 14, 2018 Remembered and forever loved, Robert passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at the age of 72. Robert was a fearless man who charged through life. In 1968, he was awarded the AFL Rookie of the Year. He then played for years as a Running Back in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs, winning Super Bowl IV, the Houston Oilers, the San Diego Chargers, and later for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL. Robert also played semi-pro baseball in the off-season. He broke down barriers of segregation throughout Texas, was given the key to the city of Huntsville, and was a proud alumnus of Southern University, where he attended on a full scholarship, and was later inducted into the school Hall of Fame. As a high tribute and twist, Robert was honoured by head coach Eddie Robinson of rival Grambling State University. Born in Texas, Robert planted his roots in Saskatchewan, and was recently recognized by the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum as an athlete who "played and stayed." He will remain a larger than life figure in the lives of his children: Robert Jr., Tony, Lee, Juland, Jarrod, Lauren, Ethan and Cayle and sisters: Pearl, Bertha, and Dorothy. He will also be remembered fondly by his adored grandchildren, family, and friends spanning from Canada to Texas and beyond. We will miss you, Robert. A small Memorial Service will be held for him at Victoria Avenue Funeral Home, 2080 Victoria Avenue East, Regina, SK on Saturday April 21, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. To leave an online message of condolence, please visit: www.victoriaavenuefuneral.com.

Robert Dough Belly/Tank Holmes: Rest in the peace of Jesus, in the love of Christ and the Blessings of God.
I grew up since 3rd grade with James and Jerry (his younger brothers) and hearing about an inspirational person affectionately called Dough Belly. I remember the Supper Bowl win from my 4th grade year as well.

Some of the best moments I've had were spent with Robert in Regina or Belle Plaine listening to him relate stories of his life in and outside of football. His stories were fun but invariably there was a life message in them as well. I will miss stopping by and chatting with him. Thank you Robert for enriching my life. I will always remember what you taught me.

Robert was a good man loved by our family. There will forever be a void in our Belle Plaine visits as Robert was sure to stop by for a visit on his ritual daily Oh Henry chocolate bar stops, always with his watchful eyes on the community he served and quick history lessons on his life gone past. Robert was always around if help was needed. He was an extended family in many ways. Our condolences to his family and loved ones. You will always be missed by us and your Chubbys friends. It will not be the same without you, you where a good friend. God bless you.

Robert was a tremendous athlete! We were athletes together at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La in the mid sixties. We use to call him "Tank Holmes" because he didn't much like running around defenders...he just ran over them, almost all with success! Rest in peace my friend and my sincere condolences to your family.

I knew Robert from the Columbus ball park in the 80's. He was an unbelievable mentor to the kids. His sport resume speaks for it's self however his warm heart and willingness to help everyone is what I remember. Hall of fame Canadian with a positive attitude and always a huge smile. An honor to have crossed your path Robert.
