BAKER, Bettie Timmons, of Richmond, Va., died peacefully on Monday, November 26, 2012. She was born June 22, 1925 in Casper, Wyoming, the daughter of Virginia Wagner and Herman Lee Timmons. She was raised in Texas and Montana by her grandparents, Betty and Archie Medlan; and an uncle, Major Joseph Timmons. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1945 and was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. She earned a master's degree in the humanities from The University of Richmond in 1970. She was a founding member of the University of Richmond Chapel Guild. She loved Bridge and earned her Life Master status and competed in many local and regional tournaments. She was a gourmet cook and enjoyed quilting. She spoke her mind and often had her letters published on the editorial page of the Richmond newspapers. She was a member of The Tuckahoe Woman's Club and the Country Club of Virginia. She was a member of River Road Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Waverly G. King Jr.; and her second husband, Everett W. Baker; and her son, William Worth King. Bettie is survived by her son, Waverly King III; and two daughters, Christine Porter and Nancy Stringfellow. She has nine grandchildren, Kate, Ashley, Charles III, Jennifer, Mark, Elisabeth, Kendall, Timmie and Von; three great- grandchildren, Connor, Dylan and Chloe. The family would like to thank Bettie's caregiver, Joyce Richardson, from Home Instead and the staff at Our Lady of Hope Health Center. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at River Road Presbyterian Church. Interment will be private at a later date. Donations may be made to the University of Richmond Chapel Guild, River Road Presbyterian Church, or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the care of Bliley Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, Va.
