Jerome Schacht Obituary

PERRYSBURG — Jerome E. Schacht, 82, of Perrysburg, died Friday, October 12, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital, Maumee, Ohio, after a lengthy illness.

Jerry was born June 18, 1936 in South Amherst, OH. He had been a Perrysburg resident since 2005. He had also lived in Port Clinton, Norwalk, and several Ohio school districts where he served as teacher, coach, principal and superintendent.

He graduated from South Amherst High School, Baldwin Wallace College where he graduated with a Bachelors degree and where he had been a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, and the University of Toledo where he earned his Masters and Educational Specialist degrees.

He began his career as a social studies teacher and football, basketball, and baseball coach in New Bremen, Crestline and Wauseon. He led his team from New Bremen to the State Final Four basketball tournament.

He also served as coach for the North team in the State All-Star Basketball game. He became a principal at Pandora-Gilboa High School, and also served as acting superintendent. He was superintendent of schools at Woodmore, Ridgedale, Indian Lake, and Mendon Union. Because his strength was assisting schools in fiscal emergency, he was offered a job with the State of Ohio Department of Education, as an area finance coordinator. His last position was supervising student teachers at Baldwin Wallace University.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Perrysburg. He was a member of the State Superintendents and Principals Association, where he held numerous leadership positions.

Jerry enjoyed membership in the Elks Club and Masonic Organizations.

He liked to travel, play golf, dance and was a lover of all sports, especially his Cleveland Indians, Cavalier, Browns and Ohio State. Jerry was always a strong advocate for continuing education.

He was a voracious reader. He had a gregarious personality and loved to walk his dog and visit with neighbors. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren's accomplishments.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Catherine E Schacht (nee Meyer) of Perrysburg; daughters, Nancy (Jim) Sloerbeck of Woodville, Joan Hamons of Perrysburg, and Carole (Nick) Espinoza of Perrysburg; grandchildren, Alyssa (Joe) Horn, Jordan Hamons, and Valerie Espinoza and Jacqueline Espinoza and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Rosea (nee Aebersold) Schacht; and brothers, Elmer, Ralph, and Donald.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 15, from 5-8:00 P.M. at the Witzler Shank Funeral Home, 222 East South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 16, at 11:00 A.M. at The First United Methodist Church, 200 West Second Street, Perrysburg, Ohio, with visitation at 10:00 A.M., prior to the service The Reverend H. Kearns will officiate. Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon at the church, immediately following the service. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at 11:00 am at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Baldwin Wallace University, 275 Eastland Rd, Berea, OH 44017 and Perrysburg First United Methodist Church, 200 W 2nd St, Perrysburg, OH 43551.
