ROGER SMITH
LIMA — Roger D Smith, age 93, of Lima passed away peacefully at 7:50 pm Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at his home.
Roger was born September 29, 1922 in Auglaize County to the late John A. and Nellie (Croy) Smith Sr. On August 4, 1945 he married Geneva F. (Miller) Smith who survives in Lima. They were married 70 wonderful years.
Roger retired from Sheller-Globe. His passion was raising race horses, which he owned, trained and drove from 1954 - 1995. Roger volunteered as a timer for the horse races at the Allen County Fair for many years and was a member of Pike Mennonite Church.
He was blessed with three children, Linda K. (Benjamin) Hoover of Elida, Patricia A. Welch who preceded him in death and Donald R. (Laura M.) Smith of Lima; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
Other survivors include, brother, Morris Smith of Marshall, MI, two sisters, Lois Leedy of Lima and JoAnn (Morris) Sheets Duggin of Waynesfield; brother-in-law, Willis A. Miller of Sauderton, PA.
He is preceded in death by, four Brothers, Dwight Smith, Bernard Smith, Mick Smith and John Smith, Jr.
Funeral services will begin 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016 at CHILES - LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Pastor Darwin Hartman will officiate the service. Burial will follow the service in Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 15, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pike Mennonite Church, 3995 McBride Road, Lima, Ohio 45807 or the Allen County Fair Grounds, 2750 Harding Hwy, Lima, Ohio 45804.

Uncle Roger was a sweet gentle man. I always called him "Trouble" just because he was the opposite of the name. He never quit even when he came to his two great great nieces memorial service just 2 weeks before. We love him dearly and will miss him so much. I'm glad we had him for 93 years! Love you Uncle Roger.
