Douglas Blackburn Obituary

Douglas A. Blackburn, 75, of West Cornwall, Conn., and New York, N.Y., died Oct. 9, 2013. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Douglas was the son of the late Lawrence and Mildred Smotherman. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale and his MBA from Rutgers and was a longtime employee of the accounting firm Arthur Young, now Ernst and Young. He was the Chief Financial Officer of the Henry Street Settlement House in New York City.
Douglas is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Wendy Weinberg and by his five children: Wendy Ward, Douglas Blackburn, Christopher Blackburn, Jonathan Blackburn and Kathryn Guidone. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren.
He retired from Henry Street to spend time with Wendy at their homes in West Cornwall and New York City. An avid cyclist, animal lover and woodworker, it was common to see him riding the roads of Connecticut on his bike, or out walking with his Akita, Asha. He also loved to eat and entertain, sharing his love of good food with his friends and family on regular nights in his home and out at local restaurants.
A memorial service will be held at Kenny Funeral Home, 41 Main St., in Sharon, Conn., on Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to make a donation to The Little Guild of Saint Francis Animal Hospital, 285 Sharon-Goshen Turnpike, West Cornwall, CT 06796.

I was a roommate of Doug's at Yale. I am very sorry for your loss and regret we failed to keep in touch after his visit to our home about 45 years ago. I too love biking and walking my dog. May God help you through this time. - Jim

I would sit across from Doug at dinner and he would always have a twinkle in his eye, a smile on his handsome face whenever he looked at his love Wendy, his wife. A beautiful memory.
