Perina Tassini Obituary

Tassini, Perina M.

Perina M. Tassini, a resident of Ossining, passed away Monday, December 10, 2012. Perina was born in Briarcliff on September 13, 1931 and was the daughter of Guiseppi and Incoronata Pizzirusso. She was 81.

Perina was a lifelong resident of the area. She attended Ossining schools from kindergarten through high school, and was a proud graduate of the class of 1950. The daughter of immigrants who did not speak English, Perina was determined to further her education. She worked to put herself through nursing school and attended Westchester School of Nursing at Grasslands Hospital, Valhalla, NY, where she received her certification as a Registered Nurse in 1953. She also attended Pace University, where she took school nursing courses. She married Frank Tassini on October 20, 1957. He predeceased her on March 21, 2007; seven months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Perina worked as an operating room nurse at Grasslands Hospital for five year, and then took time off to raise her children. Returning to work, she first substituted as a school nurse in the Ossining school system. In 1969 she was hired as a nurse at OHS where she worked for 32 years, retiring in 2001. In 2007 Perina was inducted into the OHS Hall of Fame. And in June of 2012 she was also inducted into the OHS Athletic Hall of Fame for her commitment to the OHS Athletic Program and her help and guidance with not only the athletes, but the athletic director's and all the team coaches as well.

Perina was also very active locally. She was still a member of St. Ann's Parish, where she volunteered in various capacities for many years. She served as a VP of the St. Ann's School PTA when her children were young and also as a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader. She was a past president of the Sisters of the Sick and Poor Auxiliary. She was an active member of the Ossining Business and Professional Women and is an Honorary Board Member of the Ossining Historical Society.

For the past three years Perina resided at Bethel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Croton.

Perina is survived by her daughter Marie Tassini-Ceccatti and husband Richard, of Croton; her son Peter, and wife Margaret, of Syracuse; her three grandchildren, Peter Tassini, Jr., Sarah Tassini, and Marianna Ceccatti.

Dear Marie and Peter,
I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I am sorry that we had not been in touch in the past few years but she was certainly in my thoughts and prayers so often. She certainly was a special lady. We spent many happy times together, personally and in St. Ann's and at OHS. She was one of the most caring persons I have known and helped many throughout her life. She certainly will be remembered by thousands of grateful people. May your happy memories keep her close in your hearts. Love, Teresa Brady

Perina Tassini was one of the most caring individuals that I have ever met. During my 17 years as the Athletic Director for the Ossining School District, I was amazed at the way Mrs. Tassini (Perina) treated each and every child as if they were her own. She was a special person that really was irreplaceable. I will never forget what a special educator and person she was. Our deepest sympathies to her family.

Dear Marie and Peter,
I was honored to meet you today and to pay my respects to your mother. I first met Perina in 1985, as I came to work at Ossining High School. I have seldom met a more caring, compassionate person. In the coming days, I am sure you will hear ( over and over again ) many stories of her kindness. Please know that she touched the lives of hundreds of students and staff in her career at OHS. My fond memories of your mom are numerous ... and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sincerely,
Jim Ryan

I knew Mrs. Tassini from St. Anns and from OHS. She was very much loved and will be missed. She always smiled and that is how she will be remembered!
The wind blew
a soft but gentle breeze
the candle flickered
but did not go out
love remained.

Always a friendly face at St Ann's School also. Always had time to talk and ask you how you were, always a volunteer there as well from class trips to Friday lunches from the kitchen. I had the pleasure to email with her a bit some years ago when I contacted the Ossining Historical Society with some questions and she responded back and remembered me from 30 years earlier and we caught up on family matters.Peace be with you now as you are with your Father in Heaven. Marie and Peter, I hope that in some way it comforts to know that she was loved and respected by many in the Ossining community.

Perina was certainly community-minded all her life, and always willing to help someone. I won't soon forget the years I spent with Perina at Ossining Historical Society Museum doing volunteer work with her. Our world could use more caring people like Perina. -- Linda
