James Russell Obituary
New City - James J. Russell (Jim, Scottie, Pop, Pop-Pop) of New City, NY, 90 years old, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2018. Jim was a 57 year resident of New City. Loving husband, father, and grandfather, he was born on October 27, 1927 to Elizabeth and James Russell. Jim graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Yonkers. He received his undergraduate degree from Manhattan College and graduate degree from NYU.
Jim was a paratrooper in the 501st Airborne, a national champion in paddling, and avid bird watcher. He worked with American Cyanamid for 33 years and HJ Baker for 10 years as the Director of Transportation. He was awarded the President's Award for the Environment presented by President Jimmy Carter.
Jim was a big sports fan and loved the Brooklyn Dodgers, NY football Giants, Notre Dame football and Saratoga horse racing, but his greatest joys came from his family. Sunday night dinners and family trips to Sugar Island were a highlight.
Jim is survived by daughter Dona Connor; daughter and son-in-law Diane and John Van Wagner; son Fr. Edward Russell; and son and daughter-in-law Mike and Katie Russell. He is survived by his grandchildren Cassidy, Molly, Christina, Kelly, and Shannon. He is also survived by his cousin Joe Mara and many relatives in Scotland. He was predeceased by his loving wife Peg. Jim was a friend/role model to many and will be missed by all who knew him.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, February 11 from 2-4pm and 7-9 PM at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 12 at 11am, at St. Augustine's Church, New City, followed by interment at Veterans Cemetery, Nanuet, NY.
