Culhane, John William

John William Culhane, noted Dobbs Ferry resident of 46 years, journalist/author/professor and writer for The New York Times, Readers' Digest and Media Editor ofNewsweek, passed away on July 30, 2015, at the age of 81, surrounded by his family. Culhane was a vivid lecturer, an avid advocate of the town's public library and was a two-time recipient of the Westchester Library Book Award, a historian and expert on film, the American circus, Walt Disney, and the art of animation, and author of several books on animation and film. Culhane was a professor at Mercy College, where he taught animation and mentored many young filmmakers and students throughout the Mercy and Dobbs Ferry community, as well as teaching animation at New York University and FIT. A native of Rockford, Illinois, Culhane is survived by his wife Dr. Hind Rassam Culhane, former dean and professor of social and behavioral sciences school at Mercy College, son Michael, songwriter and producer, and daughter-in-law Amy, writer/editor, son T.H. Culhane, also a professor at Mercy College, daughter-in-law Sybille, and grandchildren Kilian and Ava Culhane, brother Dick Culhane and wife Lee, sister Mary Ella Stone and husband David Stone, sister Libby Keating and husband Joe Keating, and brother Mark Culhane and wife Cheryl. Visiting from 4:00-8:00pm Sunday, August 2, at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home, 64 Ashford Ave., Dobbs Ferry. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 9:30am Monday, August 3, at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Dobbs Ferry. A life celebration will be planned for a future date in the Fall.
