Laurel Gouveia Obituary

Gouveia, Laurel Diane Theise

Laurel Diane Theise Gouveia died peacefully at home in Croton-On-Hudson on June 13th. She was 72. She leaves a sister, Pamela Rosa of Long Beach, N.Y.; nieces, Jennifer Radics and Kalindi Simic; nephew, Jason Rosa; and stepdaughters, Georgette and Regina Gouveia and Johanna Villemarette. Born in N.Y. City to James and Laura Theise, she received her Bachelors and Masters degree in education from Hunter College and taught learning disabled children in the South Bronx for 20 years. She married John Gouveia, then-owner of the County Limousine Service, based in White Plains. The couple settled in Croton, spent retirement winters in Boca Raton and enjoyed their summer friendships at Tamarack Country Club in Westchester. But before Mr. Gouveia predeceased his wife in 2007, the couple had thought long and hard about how they might finally distribute lifes' assets. Among their many generosities, they chose to offer their home, on 15+ acres of land overlooking the Hudson River, to the Village of Croton as a public park so that others may have an opportunity to enjoy its' beauty and serenity. As a result, some have recently asked how they might honor the memory of such a thoughtful and generous couple. It has been suggested that a contribution to the "Gouveia Park Maintenance Fund" might be considered. It could be mailed directly to: The Village of Croton-On-Hudson, 1 Van Wyck St., Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y. 10520. The world has lost a joyful soul. May she rest in peace.

We came upon this beautiful park-in-the-making, and walked the property in awe! Such an incredible gift to give of its peace to others; that´s exactly what we are in need of. May their memory be a blessing to all who knew them, and may they know the gratitude of all who visit their lovely park.

Dear Laurel and I have been close friends for over 60 years. We grew up on the same street in the Bronx, went to middle school, high school and College together - and the best was that we lived together in New York City for 5 years prior to my marriage and my leaving the big city. I loved Laurel dearly - and still can't believe she is truly gone. But from my mind and heart - she will always live. Her smile, her optimistic attitude toward life, her cheeriness - will always be with me when I think of Laurel. Rest in peace my dear friend. You will never be forgotten.

Laurel was more than a friend to me. I worked with her in a classroom many years and our friendship continued way passed her retirement. I truly loved her and will miss her.

Laurel lit up the lives of us all.
She was eternally joyful and optimistic and saw butterflies and rainbows in the darkest storms. I miss you already, dear Laurel, but cherish the 40 years of true friendship we shared with " the girls".??????
