Francis Mascola Obituary

Francis X. Mascola

West Nyack - On February 10, 2018, Francis Xavier Mascola passed away peacefully with his family at his side in his West Nyack home where he lived for 63 wonderful years. Frank lived a full and complete life and left a devoted legacy of fatherhood, community service and zest for life that is second to none.

Frank was the son of Salvino and Marie (Farenga) Mascola of the Bronx, NY. During WWII, Frank served in both the Marine Corps and US Army, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. His tour of duty took him to the Philippines and Japan, where he served on General McArthur's staff in Tokyo and was Chief of Economics and Labor Relations during the Japanese Reconstruction Occupation. After over 30 years of active and reserve duty, Frank retired from the US Army Reserve as a Lt. Colonel.

Frank attended Xavier High School where he was 3 sport athlete starring in football. Frank was a graduate of Manhattan College and attended the Cornell Graduate School of Industrial and Labor Relations. As one of the youngest US Commissioners, he medi-ated federal labor disputes throughout the country. He later established his own management consulting firm with offices in New York, New Jersey and Washington, DC. Clarkstown voters elected Frank as their representative on the first Rockland County Legislature. In 1973, he served as Chairman which at that time was the equivalent of today's County Executive.

Frank was well known for his volunteer service. He served on many boards, including the West Point Admissions Board, Nyack Hospital, American Cancer Society and the Clarkstown Board of Education. Frank was one of the founding members of The United Way in Rockland County and was honored by the American Red Cross in 1995 with the Community Service Award. Frank was a lifelong member of Rotary International and later served as President of the Nanuet Rotary Club.

Despite his hectic professional schedule, Frank always made time to spend with his children. He coached Little League and Clarkstown Recreation basketball for many years. He was active with the Boy Scouts as a youngster and later as a father. Later he took up tennis and passed his passion for the game on to his children. Because of their athletic dad, all of his children learned to play tennis at the iconic Merritt Tennis Courts in Pearl River.

Frank fashioned his West Nyack home backyard like a playground paradise for his children and grandchildren. When his brood was not playing in the woods behind the house, Frank and his family were often found building more memories at the Rockland Country Club or the Nyack Field Club where Frank held active memberships. In addition to golf and tennis, Frank enjoyed gardening, swimming, and travel often organizing exotic world tours with Marcey. He loved horseback riding with his wife and daughters. Frank's other hobbies included analyzing financial data and playing the stock market. Dating from his Xavier High football star days, Frank remained an avid football fan holding West Point season tickets for decades. Some of his fondest memories were made during idyllic summer family vacations at Long Beach Island, and Lavallette, New Jer-sey. Frank and Marcey also treasured spending time at their other home on Hutchinson Island, Florida.

Frank is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years Mary Alice "Marcey" (Beckerle) Mascola. Frank is survived by daughter Maureen and husband Joseph Rose of Surf City, N.J.; son Thomas More Mascola and fiancée Karen Albert (sons Brett & Paul) of Nanuet; son Francis Xavier Jr. "Ted" and wife Christine (Flood) Mascola of Blauvelt; daughter Susanne and husband Thomas Humbach of West Nyack. He was predeceased by his son Jimmy. He was also a devoted "Pa" to his grandchildren; Jay and wife Nadine, Geoffrey, Conor, Darcy, Pearse, Jack, William, Teddy, Eugene and great-grandchildren Giana and Joseph III. Frank is survived by his sisters Gloria DiCarlo (late husband Gerald) and Marie Pisano (husband Ronald). He is predeceased by his sister Betty Oliva (late husband Mike). Additionally, Frank is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 and Thursday February 15, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home, Inc. Had I asked for a more inspirational figure to be the Grandfather to my sons, Conor and Pearse, I couldn't have been more fortunate!
A life that reads like a book.
Add to that, wit and charm all wrapped up in the sharpest mind.
From his many amazing decades with Marcey, his unyielding protective love for his children.
His grandchildren's pride in being his legacy ( which the newer great grandchildren will know), I can only say that I am proud and blessed to have known him in my life.
I send my sincere love and condolences to the Mascola family and hope you find peace in knowing that you are everything he could have wished for.
R.I.P.
Love, Laura

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
