Sr. Mary Gabriel died on November 30, 2012 at Tolstoy Nursing Home in Valley Cottage, New York. She was born in Bayonne, NJ on April 7, 1920 to Michael Coughlin and Anna Ellis Coughlin. Mary Ellen as she was Christened on April 18 at St. Mary's Church in Bayonne, NJ attended St. Andrew's School, grades 1-4 and St. Vincent's School in grades 5-8 and Bayonne High School. On March 25, 1941 she entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine at Marydell Convent in Nyack, NY, and given the religious name, Sister Mary Gabriel. She professed first vows on Sept. 14, 1943 and made profession of perpetual vows on Sept. 16, 1946. Sister Gabriel continued her education obtaining a BA from Fordham University and an MA in education from Manhattan College..

During her seventy-one years of religious life, Sister Gabriel has served the Church and her religious community in many capacities. She held leadership positions as member of the Congregation Leadership Team, served as local superior, Retirement Directress, Congregational Treasurer, Congregation Secretary, teacher-trainer for catechists, and many years as Coordinator of Religious Education. Throughout the years, Sister ministered, s at Marydell Convent and Marydell Camp; Ave Maria House in the Bronx, St. Ambrose Parish in Elkton, Florida, St. Vito's Parish in Mamaroneck, NY and St. Ursula's Parish in Mount Vernon, Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Concord, New Hampshire, and Marydell Convent in Suffern, NY. Sister ministered at Sacred Heart Parish in Suffern, as a Pastoral Minister, visiting the sick and home bound. She also served at Ramapo Manor in Suffern, NY and Our Lady of Peace Chapel at Rockland Psychiatric Center and at St. Ann's Parish in Nyack.

Sister Gabriel is survived by her brothers, Vincent and Michael, and sisters-in-law Mary T, Ramona, and Peggy and many nieces and nephews, and her religious community, the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine. The wake will be held at Marydell Convent, 110 Larchdale Ave. in Upper Nyack on Tuesday, December 4th at 9:30 followed by the Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Ascension Cemetery in Airmont, NY. In memory of Sister Gabriel, donations may be made to the Sisters of Christian Doctrine at the address mentioned above.
