Mary Wilcox Obituary

Wilcox, Mary Ellen

Mary Ellen Wilcox died Monday, June 9, 2014 at her home in Sag Harbor, N.Y. She was born on August 7th 1947 to Seeley and Dorothy (Cyr) Wilcox. Her childhood days were spent in Ferrisburg, VT in the fields and pastures along Little Otter Creek. She graduated from Vengennes Union High School and Johnson State College, where she was known for her athletic ability. She was one of two women to ever be recognized by the college for female athletic ability. Later she earned her master's degree and professional diploma from Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York. She moved to Westchester County, New York in 1969 and began her career in education in the Lakeland School district, which spanned a total of 32 years; 10 years as a 6th grade social studies teacher and the remaining time as a guidance counselor in the middle schools.

She is survived by her life partner of 33 years, Ann Wallingford and her beloved King Charles Spaniel, Tucker. She leaves two brothers, Gary in Liberty, New York, and Marvin (Marty) of Keene, New Hampshire. There are 2 nieces and 3 grandnephews. Of significance to her is her chosen family in Kentucky: brother-in-law, Leroy and his wife Barbara Wallingford of Maysville, Kentucky, nephew, Darrin Wallingford and daughters, Eve and Andie of Lexington, Kentucky, and niece, Lisa and husband David Hamm, and sons, Tyler and Austin of Maysville, Kentucky.

Her life was so enriched and blessed with numerous friends. She took great comfort and peace in nature through gardening, quietly observing and bonding with special critters. She frequently said, "Nature centers me." She also enjoyed cooking, kayaking, biking, watching women's sports but most importantly being with her friends and family. After moving to Sag Harbor she became a volunteer at the Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry, which gave great meaning to her life. She would say, "I come home with so much more than I gave."

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 17th at the Old Whalers Presbyterian Church, 44 Union St., Sag Harbor, NY at 2:00pm, with the pastor, Mark Phillips, officiating. Memorial donations should be given to either the Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry; 44 Union Street P.O. Box 1241, Sag Harbor, NY 11963 or to the East End Hospice; P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton, NY 11978.

What can I say about the most compassionate and beautiful person I have ever known. She touched the lives of everyone and everything she met. Meeting her early in my career taught me so much and I forever remember her words of wisdom as well as her example that has influenced me forever. Lakeland students, staff and outside creatures have been so lucky and will live with her beautiful spirit and memories.....Love to you Ann,

I miss you, friend. I hope you will always be nearby. You used to call me "little bird." Every once in awhile, when I hear a bird singing, somehow let me know that it is you saying hello.

Ann, we were so saddened to hear of Mary's death . She seemed the picture of health, full of joy and enthusiasm, and so thrilled with
The Lady. I think back at that lovely surprise visit on Nantucket last summer and how happy I was to have had the chance to reconnect with both of you after so many years.

Dear Ann and Family,
I was so sad to hear of Mary's passing. She was a true friend to all. Her smile was contagious and the world benefited because of it! The Lakeland Central School District was indeed fortunate for Mary's compassion, professionalism, and work ethic. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

There are few "great women" who enter your life but Mary was certainly one of them. I have known her as my really true friend for 42 years. We were a "team" at both LMS and LCBMS and worked very closely in our roles as counselor and nurse to help students experiencing life's troubles and crises. Her caring, sensitive and yet playful nature helped to solve the problems of many students and faculty but outside of school she was just as genuine and caring. We frequently got lost together (in Mohansic park, the Rockefeller estate, Squantz Pond, London, etc.) but always shared many laughs about our misadventures. I will miss you forever my friend.
My wish to all her friends and family is for you to remember all the smiles she brought to your life.

I was fortunate to have Ms. Wilcox, "Willie" as I called her as my 6th grade Social Studies teacher at Lakeland Middle School in 1976. We kept in touch ever since and I always enjoyed visiting with her over the years. She was a tremendous person and someone I will always remember with respect and admiration. Willie, you will be deeply missed, but I am a better person for having known you!

Dear Ann, Tucker, and Family,
I am so saddened to hear of Mary's passing. She was a dedicated colleague, a super team member and a trusted friend to me. We laughed a lot and cried a lot together. She propped me up when I needed it and so many times as we walked into LCBMS together in the morning, she would make me stop and listen to the honking flocks of Canada Geese flying by! By doing so she set a blessed tone for entering our workplace. She truly cared about kids!! My deepest sympathy to you all. She is sorely missed.

To Ann, Tucker and the entire family,
The planet has lost a brave, generous and caring human being, but heaven is now the richer for it and is enjoying her loving spirit. I retain many fond memories of kayaking, cooking, building fires and then enjoying them with our dogs, sharing recipes and appreciating having known this remarkable soul. I'd like to remember Mary as follows: on the drive home from Riverhead, Ny specialty veterinary hospital last summer with a playmate cooler filled with hot water bottle , towel and 1 day old litter of Cavalier KC Spaniel puppies on her lap and Mama dog next to her. The smile on Mary's face was about as wide as it could be. May she be at peace, xo Nan

Dear Ann,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and everyone whose life has been affected by warm and sweet Mary. In addition to her students, her teachers were also a top priority. I know. I was one of them and boy, did she stick up for us at parent conferences. I retired in 2006 and we communicated through emails sharing stories and other funny anecdotes. I moved to what she referred to as "shortsland". One of the warmest persons to touch my life. Rest in peace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time.

I'm so saddened to hear that Mary died. When I arrived as a new teacher at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School, I was inspired by Mary's warmth and sensitivity, her love of the outdoors, her keen observations, and most of all, her caring about the children. She was terribly missed when she left our school; I'm so glad we had her here.

Ms. Wilcox was one of my all time favorite teachers. I loved 6th grade social studies because of her. She later became my guidance counselor and was the first one to recognize my mechanical abilities based on standardized test results. She had suggested interests like architecture. I hope she would be proud to know I listened and became a Civil Engineer.
God bless her, her family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I will never forget her.

I am so sorry to hear of this great loss to our world. I only knew Mary for a short time, but she made such a huge impact on my life. She was my mentor and I modeled my counseling with my students after Mary (14 years later). I will mis her greatly.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
