DALE STEIGER Obituary
Dale A. Steiger of Rye, New York, succumbed to Lung Cancer and complications of Parkinson's Disease on January 1, 2004. He was born on May 14, 1928 in La Crosse, WI, and married to Alyce (Dyrdahl) on October 8, 1949. Dale was a graduate of Central High School in La Crosse, WI., The Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, Wisconson State University in La Crosse,attended DraKe University in Des Moines, IA., and the Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. He was employed for a few years, by the Trane Co., in La Crosse and became a long term executive with Look Magazine in Des Moines, IA., becoming Executive Vice President for a number of Look Subsidiaries and an award winning art director. In 1971 he was engaged by the Curtis Publishing Co. of Indianapolis to help republish the Saturday Evening Post. In 1972 he opened Dale Steiger Associates, a consulting company which he operated in NY until his death. During that period of time, he owned and operated one consumer and one trade publication for a number of years, later selling those publications to other owners. He also created and initiated a subscription subsidiary in Des Moines, IA., titled SUBCO Inc., operating it for the ensuing years with a long time business associate, Judy Le Warne, which continues in operation today. He received a number of recognitions and awards throughout the years, including the Lee C. Williams Award for outstanding achievement in the periodical service publishing field. He was also President and CEO of Fulfillment Management Association in New York. He served on several boards including Central Registry of the United States and Canada. He was the only publishing executive to testify before the United States Senate Committee on subscription sales practices and served as an expert witness in Federal Court on the same subject at different times. He was also a founding member of the Art Directors Association of Iowa and later its President. Dale was also a member of the Cornell Club of NY, Westchester Country Club of NY and the Des Moines/Embassy Club. He was proud to have served with the United States 1st Calvary Division in occupied Japan for a year. He was also honored by his election to "Who's who in America" and "Who's who in the World". Also surviving are his daughters Christine (Anthony) Falco of Harrison, NY, Marta Steiger of Bronxville, NY, and his brother Jacob Steiger of Black River Falls, Wisconsin. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 pm, Thursday, January 22 at Rye Presbyterian Church (914) 967-0842, Rye, New York.
