Louis MacCartney Obituary

MacCartney, Louis M.

Louis McEwan MacCartney died peacefully July 21, 2011 at West Ledge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Peekskill, NY. Mr. MacCartney shared a home in Pleasantville, NY with his daughter, Leslie and son-in-law Gordon Quimby for the last twenty years. Of Scottish heritage, he was born May 23, 1921, in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Louis McEwan MacCartney and Mary Carrick McCall. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Austin and a brother, Robert Douglas. The MacCartney family came to the United States in 1923 and settled in Winthrop, Massachusetts. Mr. MacCartney attended Winthrop High School and Bowdoin College. He worked at General Electric and Raytheon for several years before embarking on a lifelong career in the life insurance business. For most of his business career, he was associated with the Jason Stone Agency of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston. He was a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant and taught evening courses at Boston University and Northeastern University in economics, finance, and estate planning. In 1977, Mr. MacCartney earned a Master of Science in Financial Services from The American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. That year he was also president of the Boston Estate & Business Planning Council. Mr. MacCartney was a past Master of Winslow Lewis Lodge, A.F. & A.M. Boston, MA. Pursuing one of his avocations, he was the original author of a genealogy entitled Some Descendants of William Tubbs, Duxbury, Massachusetts, a work which involved considerable time, travel, interviews, correspondence, and historical research. He was active and involved in his Episcopal church throughout his life (St. John's, Winthrop, MA; Church of the Advent, Boston; Christ Church, Needham, MA; Christ Church, Fitchburg, MA; and St. John's, Pleasantville, NY). He served variously as acolyte, youth leader, church school teacher, search committee member, lay reader, Vestry member, Deanery representative, Diocesan delegate, Senior Warden, and Treasurer. He also served as a member of the Diocesan Committee for Refugee Resettlement, Dean of Needham School of Religion, chairman of church camp committee (Camp Monomonac, Rindge, NH), and on the Board of Managers for Camp Bement (MA).

While living in retirement in Pleasantville, he attended the Clinton Street Senior Center, volunteered at the annual United Methodist church Christmas Tree Sale, took his turn as a local Election Inspector, and remained an ardent Red Sox fan from his years of living in the greater Boston area.

He leaves his four children and their spouses: Leslie MacCartney Quimby and her husband Gordon of Pleasantville, James McEwan MacCartney and his fianc?e Tina of Canterbury, NH, Douglas Locke MacCartney and his wife Joanne of Gardiner, MT, and William Carrick MacCartney and his wife Destiny of Mountain View, CA. He is also survived by his former wife, Sharon Locke MacCartney of Peterborough, NH. A son John McCall MacCartney and granddaughter Sarah Jeanette Quimby predeceased him. Other surviving relatives are grandson Christopher Rollhaus Quimby and numerous McCartney*, Penney, Wickwire, McCormick, McCall, Butler and Locke nieces, nephews, and cousins on both sides of "The Pond".

A graveside service will be held on September 10, 2011 at 11 A.M. at Winthrop Town Cemetery, 201 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, MA 02152. A memorial service will be held September 11, 2011 at 2 P.M. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 8 Sunnyside Ave., Pleasantville, NY 10570.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New England Historic Genealogical Society, Development Office, 101 Newbury Street, Boston, MA 02116 or The Clinton Street Senior Center, 1A Clinton Street, Pleasantville, NY 10570.
