Elizabeth Schatz Obituary

Schatz, Elizabeth

Mary Elizabeth (Liz) Schatz's radiant spirit took flight from this world shortly after noon on Monday, September 17, 2012 in Ossining, New York.

As the wife of Albert Schatz, with whom she shared 53 of her 93 years, she traveled much of the world, making lifelong friends from coast to coast and abroad and developing what would become an enduring passion for the study and collecting of glass, particularly French lacy pressed glass.

Liz had a long and varied career. She was an outstanding athlete in numerous sports, not the least of which was swimming. She swam in the Aquacade at the scene of the New York World's Fair. During World War II she was Recreation Director of the Air Force.

Her volunteer leadership activities have included: PTA President, Chairman of the Ossining and Westchester County March of Dimes, and President of the Ossining Women's Club as well as of its Garden Section. She also served as President of the Ossining Historical Society, a founding member of the Old Aqueduct Committee, and President of the Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW).

Liz was a three time Vice President of the League of Women Voters, Vice President of the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Westchester County Board of Realtors. For the Women's Council of Realtors she served as President of the Westchester Chapter, Governor for the New York Chapter, and Regional Vice President. She served on, and chaired, numerous committees at the local, state and national levels.

Liz's principal interests were in Professional Standards and Fair Housing. She received the Omega Tau Rho Award from the National Association of Realtors for all her work at the national level. She was twice honored as "Realtor of the Year" by the Westchester County Board of Realtors, and was a member of the County Executive's task force on Historic Preservation and Information.

In 2005 Liz and Al proudly accepted the esteemed Steven A. Galef Public Service Award. In 2007 the Dominican Sisters presented the couple with the first Dr. Joseph A. Cimino Community Service Award. In 2009 they received the Westchester County Board of Realtors first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award.

Above all Liz was a loving family matriarch and devoted friend to many. She lived a life of rich experiences and was a light in the lives of all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, two sons Eric and Gregg, four grandsons William, Warren, Austin, and Daniel, daughter-in-law Kelly, granddaughter-in-law Anita and a most precious great-granddaughter, Elisa.

A memorial gathering celebrating her life will be held starting at 1:00PM on Saturday, September 29 at St. Paul's on the Hill (www.stpaulsonthehill.org/), 40 Ganung Drive, Ossining. Take Rt. 9A to Rt. 133, then take a right on Ganung Drive.

Aunt Lizzie was like a second mother especially after my own mom passed. Her guidance, wisdom, and intelligence gave me immense comfort. Her love was boundless, without judgment and ever present. I can still hear her laugh. Always in our hearts from myself and my family.
