I first met Dick in 1964 when I joined The Record sports department in Hackensack, N.J., and later covered the Rangers with him for 10 years after he moved to the Journal News. He was my best man when I got married in 1974 and it was his late wife Sandi who introduced me to my wife Mary in 1973. What a great guy!

I had the pleasure of working with Dick for nearly 20 years. He was wonderful person and was always unfazed by whatever calamity was going on in the newsroom. He had a very dry and very funny sense of humor which served all of us well. My condolences to his family.

As a sports editor, Dick was my first and the best. As a man, Dick was a great example. Perceptive and grounded. Unfazed by the victories and the challenges of life, it seemed. So in love with his family. We spoke last month and he was full of life.
My thoughts are with his family and his greater family.

My sympathies to the Yerg family. I worked with Dick from 1976-83 in New York, often sharing the press box at Rangers hockey games. Dick was a good man who cut quite an image in his hat and shearling coat. We met for lunch last year in Delray Beach to talk about old times and the newspaper business. He was a good man who stayed active in sports after his retirement.
