Lewis McKinney Obituary

McKinney, Lewis W.

Lewis W. McKinney, a resident of Pleasantville for more than 50 years, passed away at age 93 on June 29, of natural causes.

Mr. McKinney was a long-time member of the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church, serving as Clerk of Session for 30 years. He also served in a variety of activities as a volunteer in the community, and for decades was a reliable supporter of Pleasantville High School athletics, in the stands or on the sidelines at many events.

He was married to Betty Boynton McKinney for 63 years, with whom he raised three children, Douglas, Barbara and David. Betty passed away in 2007; daughter Barbara died in 2009.

A graduate of Yale University and of the Yale Law School, Mr. McKinney was a corporate attorney with IBM for most of his career, serving as chief counsel of the company's Field Engineering Division for much of that time, until his retirement in 1989.

As a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. McKinney commanded a company and saw combat in the campaign to retake the Philippines, service for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was subsequently attached to General MacArthur's staff, during the Occupation of Japan. He will be interred at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery.

He is survived by his two sons, Douglas and David.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 29, at 11 a.m. at the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church, on Bedford Road in Pleasantville. For those wishing to do so, in lieu of flowers or similar, his sons request that donations be made to the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church - ASP, the Pleasantville American Legion - Post 77, or the Pleasantville High School Athletics Department.
