This is a very late condolence, indeed, but only now when I decided to look Howie up did I learn of both his elevation to the Monsignorate and his death. We were at school (Fordham) together and both worked in founding Fordham's Mexico project, in the summer of 1962, if my failing memory serves. We last met for lunch in Columbia University's cafeteria, when I ran into him by chance on that campus. I congratulated him by mail when he was posted to a church in Harlem, and later inquired after he had some trouble there with an intruder. He was always a dignified cheerful presence in every circumstance, and I am sure he will be much missed by all who had the honor and pleasure of knowing him. Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Amen

Father Calkins and I were on an advisory board in Hastings almost 50 years ago. The lessons we learned in our pre-Cana counseling sessions with him have stayed with us for 47 years. He will be missed.

If it had not been for the fact that I returned to NY to attend Sr. Patricia Scanlon's funersl, I would not have known that Msgr. Calkins had died. When Fr-Msgr. Calkins served at St.John's in Kingsbridge, I was stationed there a well. He was an inspiration -- a young priest keenly interested in forming community with his fellow priests; deeply interested in prayer and spirituality. I admired the fact that he would make a retreat each year at a Benedictine Monastery. At St. John;s, he would spend time each morning before the Blessed Sacrament before the parishioners gathered to recite the morning Office. I was always impressed that he belonged to the Jesu Caritas movement. What a wonderful way for priests to provide mutual support. It was always beneficial to have him spend time with us at the convent before presiding at Mass there. His homilies were always informative, and directed towards spiritual realities -- but never long. He did have a very charming personality. His passing is a great loss .

I got to know Msgr. Calkins through the South Shore Vicariate Council. He was warm and caring -- never without a smile and a hug -- and always willing to help you in whatever way he could. He was a genuine priest and true shepherd of the people. May he rest in peace. Sending prayers and condolences to his family.
