This is a very late condolence, indeed, but only now when I decided to look Howie up did I learn of both his elevation to the Monsignorate and his death. We were at school (Fordham) together and both worked in founding Fordham's Mexico project, in the summer of 1962, if my failing memory serves. We last met for lunch in Columbia University's cafeteria, when I ran into him by chance on that campus. I have very fond memories of Msgr. Calkins' kindness and support. His work on earth was highly appreciated. I was always grateful that he took the time to celebrate in the renewal of my 25th marriage anniversary vows. My prayers are with the family. Thank you Msgr.
