Janis Hawley Obituary

HAWLEY, JANIS LAMAR, 57, of Louisville, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, January 17, 2013.

Jan was born here in Louisville and grew up as a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She was a graduate of Seneca HS and the University of Louisville where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. Jan was a singer who sang with Louisville Youth Choir and Voces Novae for friend Frank Heller. She was a pianist and an organist who studied with the great Margaret Dickenson. Jan loved music and always sang along to any show tune. She loved to read, knit and make jewelry, and met with her dear friends from the Knit Nook weekly. Jan dearly loved her two cats and was most proud of her niece Carly.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles C. Hawley; mother, Nancy B. Hawley; and young brother, Charles C. Hawley III.

She is survived by and will be deeply missed by her two sisters, Barbara B. Hawley and Patricia C. Pennycook; her brother-in-law, David K. Pennycook; her beloved niece, Carly Jean Pennycook; and her aunts, Margaret Harmon and Marjory Bundock, as well as numerous cousins. She will be so greatly missed.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 4700 Lowe Road. Private burial.

Jan was such a special person-I sang with her in Voces Novae, and when she had to step down, I always looked for her at our concerts--what a wonderful, sweet smile she had. She was a gentle soul and delight to know. We will miss her so much.

Barb and Patty and the knit nook gals. I have known Jan since HS, when we sang together in the choral dept at Seneca. Jan and I also shared accompanying duties on piano. We shared our love of music with the Louisville Youth Choir and later Voces Novae with our friend and Director Frank Heller. Jan was always a champion for animals and anyone who needed help. I will miss her terribly. God bless you all and may God hold you and surround you with love always.
