Roy Avers Obituary
82, died at his home in Sellersburg, IN on November 13, 2015.
He is survived by his wife, Monica; his four children, Dale, Gary, Carol, and Ellen; his stepdaughter and friend, Rachelle Cassetta; his 7 grandchildren, Sarah, Rob, David, Laura, Ryan, Kyle, and Katie; his sister, June Wagner; and his brother, Jack.
His most treasured memories include singing with the chorus of the Kentucky Opera, celebrating a landmark birthday with international friends in Brazil, building a log home on Lake Nolin with his son, and experiencing the peace he felt at Tintern Abbey.
His proudest moments and his most fulfilled time, however, were spent in his years as a Talking Book narrator for the American Printing House for the Blind. He loved going to work; he believed in the mission he supported. With over 1750 books in the Library of Congress, he has had and will have a positive, lasting impact on the blind and physically handicapped community for whom he recorded.
A special acknowledgement along with sincere gratitude must be expressed to Todd Hasson, Roy's studio monitor and friend whose visits he looked forward to both for the companionship and the strawberry milkshakes. You made a difference. Thank you.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Printing House for the Blind on November 21, 2015 from 2:00-7:00. Memorial gifts may be sent to the American Printing House for the Blind, 1839 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville, KY 40206.

His Readings of Song of Ice and fire still instill the most chills, and most feels that I am likely to feel from the series. Although Roy Dotrice is amazing in his ability and performance as a man or woman is likely to hear. The deep, rich, and haunting tones of Roy Avers' voice are missed by myself and many others when I hear the first couple books of The Song of Ice and Fire. I am truly infatuated by his depiction of Ned and children alike. His deep voice and the resonance of the classic recording leave me transfixed EVERY time. I'm enhanced by his existence , and yet heartbroken by his absence. I trust his life was meaningful to those that were close to him, but to those of us that know him merely by his voice, I say I learned of your light much too late and will always praise you. Thank you Ser Roy of Avers. I cry for you now, but am blessed by your presence.

Dear Monica and family, Roy came to be one of my favorite narrators. I especially enjoyed HOT HOUSE and DREAMS ARE NOT ENOUGH. His vocal intonnations and characterizations made his books come alive. One only had to meet him to experience what a kind person he was and his unique sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Roy Avers will always be the voice of a gentle violin. Having known and heard him working at the Census Bureau, I know what a valuable person God has received home. His presence will be greatly missed. I continue to hold Monica and his family in my prayers. He is "soaring on the wings of angels..." Love to all of you.

I have often seen Roy coming into APH to read. He had an awesome voice and always seemed happy to be here. Thank you, Roy, for your years of dedicated service to reading books for the enjoyment of individuals who either could not read print or read print with great difficulty. You will long be remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Monica, your children, stepchildren, and grandchildren. I hope all the wonderful memories of your time with family and friends will soon replace the heartache that is felt by your passing.

Roy's voice has accompanied me through many hours of delightful reading. What is remembered lives, and I know that Roy's narration will continue to bring tremendous pleasure to so many, myself most definitely included. Roy was a rock, a strong, dedicated, intelligent, and gifted narrator, and friend. He was instrumental and steadfast in his efforts to help his fellow narrators achieve a greater voice in their work. He was wise, and gentle, and a person of great integrity. He taught me much, and I will miss him, as will thousands of others. Peace and love to you Monica, and to all of Roy's family.

I first heard Roy Avers' voice as a small boy. Later, his reading of "Airport," stands out most in my mind. My heart aches to hear of his passing.
