Nicholas Simon Obituary
passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016.
Born September 24, 1958, he attended Holy Spirit grade school, was a graduate of St. Xavier High School in 1977 and a graduate of Northwestern University with a BA Degree in History in 1981. He succeeded his father in 1990 as president of Publishers Printing Company with his brother Michael as executive vice president. Publishers has been the largest employer in Bullitt County for many years. Nick's business, charitable and civic organizations include being a board member of Stock Yards Bank and Trust Company, Assumption High School, Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, Governor's Scholars Program, Kentucky Historical Society Foundation and Louisville Library Foundation. His awards include being inducted into the Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame, DeSales High School Hall of Honors and Bullitt Central High School Hall of Fame. He was a recipient of The Bethlehem High School Star Award and the St. Xavier Outstanding Alumnus Award. He was also inducted into the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame and received the Heart of the Community Award from Women4Women. He received the Corporate Leadership Award from Nativity Academy, the Spirit of Day Spring Award and was presented with the Lighthouse Keeper Award from Harbor House of Louisville, 4-H Partners in Progress Award and inducted into the St. Xavier Alumni Hall of Honors. Ursuline Campus Schools presented him with the Laurel Award. He was awarded the First Annual Distinguished Citizen Award from Bullitt County Education Association and the Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce. He received the Leader of the Year Award from Caritas Foundation and the prestigious Veritas Award from St. Catharine College and an honorary degree from Spalding University. Nick was presented with the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Bullitt County Scottish Rite Club and the Father Maloney Community Service Award from Boys' Haven. He was a recipient of the Salute to Catholic School Alumni Award and was honored by the Volunteers of America with the Philanthropist of the Year Award. He was honored by the American Heart Association as Volunteer of the Year and received Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. The Bullitt County Red Cross honored him as Volunteer of the Year. Nick built the Bullitt County YMCA and was honored by them as the Greater Louisville Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. The Louisville Litho Club honored Nick as Member of the Year and he was inducted into the Printing Industry Association of the South (PIAS) as Man of the Year. He was inducted into the prestigious Printing Impressions/RIT Printing Industry Hall of Fame.
Nick had a loving heart, a gentle spirit, a constant smile, unfailing optimism and always looked for the best in everyone. Nick was such a community-oriented person, always willing to help and would be embarrassed when organizations tried to praise him. Bullitt County Pioneer News might have stated it best: "The man was known more for his generosity than any wealth he may have earned. Simon truly had a philanthropic spirit and enjoyed giving to any group or individual who sought assistance."
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed sharing his trips with friends and family to Mexico, Canada and Argentina. He was also a racquetball enthusiast.
He will be greatly missed by employees, whom he cherished as family at Publishers Printing Co., his many vendors, clients and the entire Bullitt County community. He was a member of Ascension and St. Martin of Tours
Left to cherish his memory are his three children, Anna Simon, Nicholas Simon and Alexander Simon; his siblings Elizabeth Montgomery (Guy), Franny Aprile and Michael Simon (Debbie); his stepfather Joe Thomas and his dear girlfriend Rhonda Karageorge. Others include Nanette Simon, the mother of his children, numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank E. Simon and Elizabeth Kennedy Simon.
The family wishes to thank Jerry Burton, Nick's dear friend for his support and friendship.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday June 15, 2016 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church 639 S. Shelby Street with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery.Visitation will be held from 1-8 pm Monday, June 13, 2016 and Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Pearson's 149 Breckenridge Lane.
Expressions of sympathy can be sent to St. Vincent DePaul, The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, Bullitt County Seven Counties Services Behavioral Health, Bullitt County Library or one of the organizations listed above.

From the time I met Nick at St X, he was incredibly bright, upbeat and always saw the good in others. My fondest memories of him were from our experiences on the cross country team under Coach Cooper. He had a wit that still makes me laugh when I think about all the funny quips he had for almost every situation. He was blessed with great business instincts, but more importantly, channeled his financial success into a multitude of ways to give back and help others. We all had seen glimpses of Nick's immense generosity but as it turned out, that was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how many people's lives he positively impacted. After reading all the accomplishments in his brief life, we are all reminded of how significant Nick's loss is to the community. My life is better for knowing Nick as both a friend and someone I admired who always gave back. You left big shoes to fill here Nick. Rest in Peace and God Bless.

Nick was one of the first people I met when I arrived at Northwestern University. He lived on the same hallway in the dorm, and for two years we would often just hang out in one another's room, talking and laughing. Nick was even more kind than he was smart, and he was very intelligent. Another friend from the dorm reminded me the other day that Nick was very proud of his hometown, and would school all of us on the proper way to pronounce Louisville. I started to call on Publisher's Press right before Nick's father passed away. Nick has always been one of the most memorable people I have ever encountered with his caring and generous nature. Nick was the consummate business person that always looked out for what was right for Publishers and its employees and being fare with his vendors. Nick always remembered the things about you and your family as well as deals that we had done. His passing for Publisher's employees, the community and his business partners will be very difficult to overcome but his infectious spirit and the way he treated people should be a lesson for all of us to remember him by.

I started working at publisher's after returning from basic training with Kentucky Air National Guard in 1984. There were not a lot of good jobs to be had at the time as the country was in a recession. Publsihers took a chance on me and I will never forget that. Great family owned business and I can not say enough good about the Simon Family. Nick was a good down to earth person with a big heart. I worked at Publishers for 28 years. I remember when I started in Shepherdsville Pressroom as a Secretary. Nick came in my office and asked me to page some one, I did but found out later that person didn't even work at Publishers. He was always pulling pranks like that. Nick you were an inspiration to me and the many friends that we shared. You were always the "go to guy" when we needed you and you never thought twice about helping.
I respected your business leadership and talked about you often when I would go into Stockyards Bank where you were an admired and well respected board member.
As much as I knew all that you did for the community and worthwhile local organizations like my children's school Scared Heart to name one ,you helped 10 times more than I thought you did. What I knew was what I only personally watched you do. The reason I didn't know more is because you never talked about what you did or were doing for others. You were truly the most generous and humble human being I have ever seen or heard.
The one business deal we did together showed me the person you were and the man I was proud to know.
Knowing you were in this community gave me a sense of comfort because I knew while you were on this earth you would be there to catch the needy that needed you and the ones that didn't realize they needed you. So many people needed you, loved you and respected you and you will be dearly missed.

Thank you, for standing beside your company and pulling us through hard times. Myself, and my family thank you. This was my first job, beginning at the age of 18, and still is. I'm glad to say that I've been a part of this company under your leadership. You will truly be missed.

I will always remember Nick as a truely generous and compassionate businessman, citizen, and fellow human being. Qualities not attributed to many with means, but Nick was not typical.
He let his light shine, we've seen his good works, and they've inspired us.

I started working at Publishers in Aug 1984. My first job. Frank used to hand deliver our pay checks and shake our hand and say thank you. Nick has always been a kind and sweet man like his father. When he saw you at work he knew you by name and always spoke or stopped to talk. Publishers was an awesome place to work because of him. I know his publishers family will miss him deeply. My thoughts and prayers are with his kids and family!

I played racquetball with Nick for many years at the old Advantage Tennis, and later at LAC in J-town. What a wonderful person. He shall be sorely missed. I will play in his honor next week. Steve Lazar
