Karem Deeb Obituary

DEEB, KAREM ABRAHAM, passed away peacefully May 30, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Louisville, KY on February 8, 1921 and lived there until 1930 when his family moved to Shelbyville, KY. Through the years he has shared his fond memories of growing up in Shelbyville. Karem worked in his parents' Court Restaurant, delivered newspapers, learned to swim, hunt and fish, and developed many long friendships.

Karem was raised in a family with firm religious roots and strong values. He was a man with a strong sense of duty who loved the Lord. He cherished his family and friends, his church and his country. We will remember him as a loving husband, caring father, grandfather and great grandfather, dear brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

He was well aware of the blessings God had bestowed upon him. He shared those blessings with others and helped them find their way. He was greatly respected for this giving and honest spirit. Karem felt honored to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. As a younger man he was a lifetime member of the Highland Optimist Club and their many youth projects and served on his church council. He was known as the 'last iceman in the Highlands' and Karem Deeb Ham Sandwiches became an institution well beyond the city of Louisville. You could recognize him anywhere in his khaki shirt and trousers.

Karem was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Abraham Deeb and Anna Thomas Deeb; his loving wife, Lucille Coury Deeb and sweet son, David K. Deeb; his brother, Norman A. Deeb; and sister, Nora Mallick.

He is survived by his daughters, Janice Deeb Gritton and Ginger Deeb Mitchell; son, Michael (Carol) Deeb of Louisville, and daughter-in law, Connie Lane Deeb of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, David Deeb and Joey (Gina) Deeb of Nashville, TN, Todd (Anna) Mitchell, Tony Mitchell, Cameron Deeb, Coury (Anne) Deeb, Tyler (Noel) Deeb of Louisville, Kathleen (John) Gritton Eich of Madison, WI, and Victoria Gritton in Sunnyvale, CA; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

"Well done, good and faithful servant..." His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at St. Michael Orthodox Church, Hikes Lane and Furman Blvd. Burial will follow his service in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Orthodox Church where Trisagian prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Donations may be made, in his memory, to St. Michael Building Fund, St. Michael Food Pantry or to the charity of choice.

My father and Mother loved Karem so much. My father, Michael R. Amin, a barber, cut his hair all his life. He came to my parents home many times and ate my mother's tabouleh. He was a very fine man who always remembered my parents after they were gone. I loved listening to him tell me about my father when they were younger. A gentle spirit.

40 years ago we used to live in Seneca Gardens. As a young boy me and my friends used to go to Kareem Deebs. We would buy Chocola's and Suzy Q's and sit and talk with Mr. Deeb in the furniture out front of the store. To this day, every time I pass that store I have fond memories. Rest in peace Mr. Deeb.

I'll never forget about 40 years ago when I ordered a ham on rye with mustard and mayonnaise. He said "You must be a Presbyterian." What a great guy.
