I first met Steve in 1961, we were members of the Louisville Jaycees working on the Parade Committee. I discovered that we had a mutual love of horses and all things racing. I also came to know his dad as well. In the winter of 1987, Steve was at Gulfstream Park and I gave him a horse to train which Billie Mott had just broken her maiden in Chicago in a brutal snow storm which closed the track. Steve did a brilliant job and called me a month later telling me to go to the bank and come get my picture taken. He joined an elite group of horseman who never lost a race for me because the day Roman Hat won she was claimed by Spend A Buck's trainer. What a man...steady as always...and always the same...a truly great person. My very best to Barbara and girls! RIP welbythomascoxjr.com

A few years ago Steve and my cousin Barbie invited me and my service dog to their home. I could not have been treated any nicer than how the whole family welcomed me and made me feel totally at home. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. This is a great loss.
