Steven Morguelan Obituary

MORGUELAN, STEVEN LEE, 62, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2012 unexpectedly.

Steve was a Louisville native who had an incredible and innate love for his friends and family, particularly his two daughters and his wife of 23 years.

Steve graduated from Saint Xavier High School and was a 1972 graduate of the University of Kentucky where he was a member of S.A.E Fraternity. Steve was a miracle man, to say the least. His eight year battle with cancer, forced him to retire from his self succeeding and passion for horse racing. He owned and trained thoroughbred race horses for 30 years at many of the major race tracks. Steve had a life long love of the Ohio River.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart and Doris Morguelan.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Cushing Morguelan; daughters, Brittany Ann Morguelan and Amanda Nicole Morguelan; and an aunt, Mary Jane Eppinger.

His funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday September 15, 2012 at Epiphany Catholic Church 914 Old Harrods Creek Rd. with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Friday at Ratterman's, 3711 Lexington Rd.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may go to the James Graham Brown Cancer Center or Kentucky Race Track Chaplaincy.

I first met Steve in 1961, we were members of the Louisville Jaycees working on the Parade Committee. I discovered that we had a mutual love of horses and all things racing. I also came to know his dad as well. In the winter of 1987, Steve was at Gulfstream Park and I gave him a horse to train which Billie Mott had just broken her maiden in Chicago in a brutal snow storm which closed the track. Steve did a brilliant job and called me a month later telling me to go to the bank and come get my picture taken. He joined an elite group of horseman who never lost a race for me because the day Roman Hat won she was claimed by Spend A Buck's trainer. What a man...steady as always...and always the same...a truly great person. My very best to Barbara and girls! RIP welbythomascoxjr.com
