Clarence Mattingly Obituary

Mattingly, Clarence B. Sr.,

passed away at home, on March 30, 2015. Clarence would have been 97 years old on April 13, having been born April 13, 1918.

He served during World War II and spent nearly 3 years in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. Clarence was a carpenter as a young man, and worked with several of his brothers building homes. He built his own home, on nights and weekends, while working full-time at Ford Motor Company. He retired from Ford after 30 years in 1975, at the age of 57.

Clarence was a devout Catholic and a generous man, who lived to support his family. He had some wonderful gardens and his family still can't find a tomato to compare with those he grew. He liked traveling with his family, solving crossword puzzles, card and board games, listening to and talking about the weather and watching sports. He was an avid University of Kentucky fan. He had a keen sense of humor, and was direct and honest to a fault.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Aline Mattingly; his wife of 52 years, Bertha; his four brothers; Manuel, Elmer, Sam and Millard Mattingly; one sister; Elise Clemons; and his grandson, Greg Mattingly.

He is survived by three sons, Clarence Jr. (Linda), Terry (Barbara), and Timothy (Tjuna) Mattingly; his brother, Pat (Jo) Mattingly; a sister, Mary Fisher; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friend/Eucharistic Minister Dick Zirnheld was a loyal and helpful visitor to Clarence in recent years. The family also wants to thank Mercy Works Louisville and Hosparus for their help and care in Clarence's final days; and , are especially grateful to Katherine Ann Travis, his niece, for traveling from West Virginia and caring for him until his final breath.

A Service will be held Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Arch L. Heady & Son Funeral Home, 8519 Preston Hwy., Louisville, KY, 40219 with Interment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday from 2-8 p.m.

The family request that in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy be made to American Heart Association or Catholic Services Food for the Poor. Please visit our website www.archlheadypreston.com to leave your online condolences.
