Aidan Stone Obituary

Stone, Aidan M.,

moved with his young family to Louisville in 1952 to work at General Electric's major appliance division at Appliance Park. He worked as engineer there until his retirement in 1983, during which time he received 18 patents for his designs.

A dedicated family man, he is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Barbara, four children, Susan McGarrity (John), Ted Stone (Joni), Scott Stone (Tykie Tobin) and Janet Seitzer (Bruce), nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his sister Pat Colandrea of Maryland.

Aidan was born in Chicago in 1923 to the Reverend and Mrs. Morton C. Stone, spent his high school years in Bronxville, NY, and attended Yale University (1945). His college studies were interrupted by officer candidate school and entrance into the 87th Infantry. He served as a forward observer in the field artillery in Europe, and was among the Allied forces who reached the Buchenwald prison camp. After the war he returned to Yale and got his engineering degree in 1947.

Besides family and work, Aidan was a dedicated volunteer at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Habitat for Humanity, and in the past with the Louisville Youth Orchestra. He was a painter, working in oils and watercolor, and a talented woodworker, designing and crafting complicated and beautiful furniture pieces for his family.

Services will be Monday, August 24, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthews Episcopal Church on Hubbards Lane.,

Aid was as fine and fair a man as I ever met. On hearing his story, I think I know why.
