John Furry Obituary

John A. Furry St. Johns John A. Furry, 81, of St. Johns went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 11, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Carroll Furry for 59 years. Cherished father of 5 children; Lynne (Rob) Lewis, Todd (Mary) Furry, Scott (Barb) Furry, Jenine (Paul Clifford) Furry and Laura (Tim Franz) Rayner. Loving grandfather to Kyle, Nicholas, Kristen, Zachary, Chad, Sara, Grant, Erika, Alexander, Spencer, Leah, Winston and Frances Carroll. He is survived by a brother, Francis (Ethel) Furry, sister, Karen Ruyle, sister-in-law, Nina, and many nieces and nephews. John was born April 28, 1932 in Bethlehem, PA. He was high school Valedictorian and received his B.A. from Michigan State, where he was captain of the gymnastics team, and later he earned M.A. from CMU,. John has resided in St. Johns for 57 years. He was a teacher, guidance counselor, and Director of Adult and Community Education. He was the first wrestling coach and also coached boys and girls gymnastics. John was responsible for starting the soccer program in St. Johns. He was a member of the Jaycees, Lions Club, Men's Art Club and served on the City Commission (Vice Mayor). John was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and sang in the choir for over 55 years. His many hobbies included drawing and painting, fishing and playing cards. He also enjoyed helping people, especially his children, on home improvement projects. John will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at First United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ellen Zienert officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Friday, November 15, 2013, 5-8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Johns First United Methodist Church.

John was instrumental in my decision to join the Army and become a lindquist. When I returned home he hired me to teach history, government and physical education for adult students. He was a great role model and a kind man. RIP John!

So sorry to hear of John's passing. He was my teacher and gymnastics coach. I also knew him as an adult, my husband taught with him.
