Donald Herbert Huldin M.D.

Donald Huldin Obituary

Donald Herbert Huldin, M.D. Donald Herbert Huldin, M.D., 77 years, died Saturday, July 17, 2010. He was born in Muskegon, Michigan, the son of Blanche and Ewald Huldin. Donald graduated from Carleton College where he met his wife of 54 years, Lois Jordan. He attended the Medical School at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, did his internship in San Francisco with the Public Health Service and a Dermatology residency at the University of Michigan. He practiced Dermatology in Jackson, Michigan before moving to Okemos and opening an office in Lansing. He valued his association with the Michigan State Medical Society and with the Michigan State University Medical School, where he was a professor from 1971 to 1997. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Raymond. He is survived by his wife, Lois; his brother, Jack Huldin (Barbara); Donna Huldin, his sister-in-law; four daughters, Jennifer Huldin, Julie Huldin, Jacqueline Schlein (Matthew) and Josie Jordan Lipkin (David); ten grandchildren, Kate, Sam, Ben and Molly Doyle, Samantha, Noah and Gabrielle Schlein, Ari, Ahlora and Annabelle Lipkin. The name Donald derives from the Celtic "Proud Chieftain", and a proud chieftain he was, literally and figuratively. Donald was a proud alumni of Carleton College and the University of Michigan Medical School. And, although he was proud to have served on the faculty of the Michigan State School of Medicine and as president of the Ingham County Medical Society, he always said he felt it was rather an honor to be a physician and was daily grateful to be able to help and serve. Don was also a proud member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) and sang with gusto as a baritone with the Capital City Chordsmen in Lansing and with choirs in Traverse City, Jackson and Sarasota. He was a proud member of his church and church choir at Peoples Church and a proud supporter of the Okemos Public Schools Music and Athletic programs. Yet, above all he was proud of his family, boasting to his patients daily of their accomplishments big and small. It is ironic that he died of heart failure, for Don had a heart bigger and more generous than most and he delighted in giving, and sharing. He paid for the college tuition of many family members and friends and would always offer you a bite off his plate of whatever he was eating. He loved finding just that special gift for Christmas and taking the family out to dinner to celebrate occasions. Many would say, however, his most valuable gift was the gift of gab. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, at anytime, calling them, "partner", and leaving them with a smile and a warm feeling inside because he showed interest in them and cared. A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 24th at 10:00 a.m. at Peoples Church, 200 West Grand River, East Lansing, Michigan, 48823. Don made a practice of reaching out to those in need, so in lieu of flowers the family requests you make a donation to your favorite charity.

I will remember him fondly. He was so kind, bright, and generous; he treated his patients with great care. When I was in high school he encouraged me to attend Carleton but was supportive when I chose U of M.

Dear Lois and family:

Please accept my thoughts and prayers during this time of loss. Don was a wonderful man and friend. Never without something nice to say, Don brightened every day I spent with him at the golf courses. To me and many others he will always be fondly remembered as Dr. Itch. He was a true gentleman and whether he truly cared of not, he always showed a sincere interest in me and my family. I am sorry I could not make the memorial. Surely, I will remember Don and all of you in my daily thoughts and prayers. He will be greatly missed. God Bless Don and all of you.

Sorry to hear of Dr. Huldin's passing. I wanted to let you know what a difference he made in my life. When I was only 12 I had a sever case of acne. Covered from my entire face, chest, arms and back. As a girl of that age you can only imagine the humiliation I felt to be so different. My parents being of meager income were recommended to Dr. Huldin and I'm thankful to them for allowing Dr. Huldin to treat me and for Dr. Huldin allowing them to make monthly payments. I remember my first visit like yesterday. I was crying and he walked in with a tootsie pop in his mouth. Promised me I would be wearing sleeveless dresses and the prom and having many boyfriends. I went to him for 7 years, the last few going because I was afraid to stop going for fear the acne would return. Many times he spoke that he wished he had taken before and after pictures of me because I was his worse case ever for someone that young. I owe him my face, my outgoing personality and confidence. He cleared up my acne on all parts of my body without one scar. I remember him telling me if I married a man with acne, my kids would get it for sure. If I didn't they had a 50% chance of inheriting that. Fortunately my 3 beautiful daughters when through life without my awful acne. But they went through their teen years with me checking their faces closely telling them we would be seeing Dr. Huldin at the first sign of Acne. He was an wonderful doctor and a awesome human being. To be able to make me feel so comfortable at a terrible time in my adolescence contributed to the person I am today. I'm so sad for his early passing and my thoughts and prayers are with your family. I'm 51 now so it has been many years, but I remember him like it was yesterday. I have beautiful, wonderful skin thanks to him. God Bless you. Irene Pena
