Dears Bonnie, Heather and Whitney,
I just wrote a rather lengthy message which I seem to have lost. Just wanted you to know how much I have appreciated all the tributes to Doug. He was a rare and grace-filled man...as witnessed in his own words and those of others. He was even a stand out Sherwood, among some other memorables. I knew him as a college student at "K", but I still recognized him in the views of others. Blessings and love to each of you as you continue to adapt to his legacy.
Love,
Kilby (Susan Kilborn François, '68)

We loved Doug and were delighted to get to know he and Bonnie over the last 10+ years. He was a gentleman who lived his life well, and showed it the way he cared about people.

I left MSHDA employment in 1980 but I often think of Doug, especially when I hear of a baby being born at home (not planned), in a car, taxi etc. I think back to the day Doug came in after helping deliver one of his daughters at home. He was soooo proud and excited as he told of the experience.
Doug had a great sense of humor and we shared many "puns". I know I will continue to think of Doug whenever a baby comes before the delivery room. I trust his family and loved ones will lean on their memories when the sad times come.

Doug will always stand out as one of the best public servants I have ever worked with in my 30 year plus career. On numerous occasions I saw Doug drive across the state to meet with small and large town city councils and reluctant banking partners to convince them that a tax abatement or a loan to assist in the development of an affordable housing project would be beneficial to their community. He stuck his neck out to support projects that he thought would make a difference. I am proud to have known him and considered him a friend and a supporter. May your memories of his many gifts sustain you through this very difficult time.

Thank you to everyone who came to visit our dad this summer or who communicated memories and best wishes by phone or mail. My sister and I are doing fine, as are our mother, grandmother, and aunts. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have had a beautiful summer with our father. It was so special to us to reconnect with our dad and watch him interact with friends and colleagues. If the measure of a man is the friends he keeps, then our father was an amazing man indeed. We were humbled by his deep friendships with you very special people and honored to share his last days with you. We will never forget his "living wake" this summer and we know how much it meant to him. We truly believe he found peace and happiness over the last few months and this made it so much easier to let him go on Monday. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the nurses, aides, administrators, and staff of the Sparrow Hospice House of Mid-Michigan. They are wonderful people doing important work. They went beyond providing care this summer to offer all of us their friendship and support, and we will be making a donation there in memory of our father. My sister and I will continue to do our best to pass on the values and ideals we learned from our father through our work and our lives.

Prayers for Bonnie and Doug's family at this time of grief and loss. Doug was a friend to many and a cheerleader for neophytes in the affordable housing arena over the years. He encouraged me along. For that I am grateful. I will miss him at the conferences and meetings. He is a loss to your family but also to the housing profession.
