Harold Hilbert Obituary

Harold Paul Hilbert (1935-2010) Harold was the only son of Harold and Annette Hilbert, the youngest of three children. He is survived by his wife, Becky, of almost 30 years; his children: Sean (Linda) Hilbert, Vernon (Kristi) Elliott, Dan (Casey) Elliott, and Carina Hilbert; ten grandchildren; his sister Gina (Ken) Coleman and twin sister Pauline (Will) Williams; and many, many cousins. A Pearl Harbor survivor, Harold was born in Long Beach, CA before first moving to Honolulu, HI and then to Lewiston, ID; the Bay Area in California; the Lansing area; and finally settling in Mason for the last 33 years. He finished a machinist apprenticeship at Mare Island Shipyard at 19, was drafted into the Army during the Cold War, worked in our nation's nuclear defense industry, and earned his mechanical engineering degree from Michigan State in 1966. During his student years at Michigan State, Henry Blosser hired him to work at the then-new cyclotron laboratory, and Harold worked his way up from student worker to Senior Project Engineer in charge of building and maintaining the cyclotrons and research equipment. Harold retired in 2000, moving on to work for his son, Sean, at Cobra Motorcycles, working long, fun-filled weeks selling the only American-made dirtbike. He will be missed by his family and many friends, as well as the many people he helped through the years hiding his big heart behind his gruff demeanor. A memorial service was held at Holt United Methodist Church on Thursday at 3p.m. with a celebration of his life to follow at 5pm at the home. Dress is casual in keeping with Harold's wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the MSU College of Engineering's scholarship fund in Harold's name. He always believed in the worth of an engineering degree and a good education. He was a Spartan to the end.

During the early 2000's my husband and I rented a house from Harold and Becky. At the time, I was attending MSU to earn a degree in education. I was privileged to hear Harold's Pearl Harbor story a number of times and have since shared it with classrooms of students in three states. I think of Harold every December 7th and will continue to share his story with future engineers. It was a pleasure to know him.

Becky: I was shocked and deeply saddened yesterday to hear of Harold's passing. Harold took me under his wing and treated me like a son when I worked at the Cyclotron Lab as an undergraduate student at MSU. I wanted to travel down to see him, have him meet my 3 young children and give us "the tour" this summer. I think and speak of him often because he was such a big part of my life for so many years. I've never met a better father than Harold. Please accept my sincere condolences. Godspeed Harold!

Becky, Sean, Carina, and family. It was a great shock to hear of the passing of my friend and mentor. From the first time I met him that day I walked into the Lab, his great personality, warm heart, and intense devotion to family and friends became more and more evident over time. I had thought of him recently, and planned to contact Harold Paul and Becky this summer to catch up. I will miss his broad smile and happy chuckle that could brighten any day. He was a great engineer who taught me that virtually any idea could come to life with a few tools, some creativity, and as much perseverance as might be necessary. I will miss him terribly. Becky and family, Marv and I were so upset when we read the obit in the Hillsdale paper. We didn't think Harold's passing could possibly happen so quickly. We were looking so forward to this summer when we could get together with you and Harold Paul for a bbq and sit out in the yard and get to know you both better. It was a short acquaintance but better to know him a short time than not at all. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Maybe in time we will see you down the street. Harold was like a father to me at the lab, encouraging me and coaxing out whatever mechanical skills I possessed. I consider working at the lab among the most valuable experiences in my life, and can't thank him enough for his guidance and patience. I've thought of him often through the years and I know he will be sorely missed by anyone who had contact with him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this time of great loss.

Dearest Becky and Harold Paul's family,
I sure will miss Harold Paul, he's been a very special man in my life. He always laughed at my jokes when he stuck his head into the "shack" and was there for me supporting me at the most difficult time in my life. He truly did have a kind heart under his tough guy exterior. I feel so blessed and honored that I knew him, and will have memories to hold in my heart of the special bond we had. God take you home Harold Paul. I will miss you. Tell my dad Hi when you meet him in heaven.
May your memories and God hold you Becky and all who loved Harold Paul. Love, Kimberly
