Okla Johnson Obituary

Okla Warren Johnson Haslett Okla Warren Johnson, age 69, of Haslett, died on July 8, 2010. Okla was born in Pueblo, Colorado, to Okla Wayne Johnson and Charlotte Louise Johnson (Mulkey), in 1941. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by four children, Travis (Lisa) Johnson, Marlo (Thomas) Heniser, Shawna (Mike) Haid, and Kristen (Stephen) Leeman; nine grandchildren, A.J., Kate, Chayse, Cody, Taylor, Cayden, Maddie, Keagen and Gabriella; and his ex-wife, Jan (LeVeque) Davenport (John). Kendra Weaver, whom he called his "adopted" daughter, was also there by his side and was a wonderful friend to all of us through this difficult time. He received his Masters' degree in Physical Education from Michigan State University. He was a physical education teacher and a wrestling coach in Saginaw, Grand Ledge, DeWitt and Okemos, Michigan, as well as several high schools in Colorado. He was the first four time state champion in the nation in wrestling. He wrestled for Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a Big Ten Wrestling Champion in 1961 at Michigan State University and was also an alternate in the 1964 Olympics. His family would like to thank the staff at Dimondale Nursing Home and Ingham Regional Medical Center for their expert and kind care of their father, especially Terry, who spent a lot of hours talking about wrestling with him. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 16, 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in East Lansing, with lunch/visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made toward his funeral costs. A memorial fund has been set up at Citizens Bank for Okla W. Johnson.

This is Colorado Johnson Kathy.I am Jim's oldest and have many fond memories of going to visit Aunt Charlotte in Loveland with my Grandma Lillian.I also remember going to Okla and Jan's for "johnson family dinners " when Okla was teaching at Loveland High (i think)I remember all of us kids looking forward to seeing him cuz he was an adult but he was "little" like us and he liked us which made him alot neater to us than "the other adults".My Dad said that Okla stopped by the house a few summers ago to visit him,he stayed for a few hrs and had a wonderful visit just the 2 of them and then he hugged him and said how glad he was that he had come by and that he sure did miss us all and that is the last we heard.I am very sorry we were not aware of his passing we are grieving with you now and like my little sister said, our Love and thoughts are with you now and always.God Speed Okla...

Okla was all-american in 1962 (3rd place in ncaa at 115 lbs)

We had a good college wrestling team Okla, and you were one of the best. Your teammates will remember you with great fondness, forever.

It's hard to understand why people are taken from us, but find comfort in knowing you were all a special part of such a well-lived life. May happy memories carry you through this sorrowful time.

Thank you all for your comments. There are so many great memories of my Dad. He was instrumental influencing me in hiking and nature. He was a great wrestling coach for me. I remember a couple of guys that I wrestled come up to me after a match and ask me what was that move that you used. I always told them that you will have to ask my Dad, he taught it to me. I love you Dad. Thanks for all the memories.. Your Son Travis Johnson

Yes I remember the summer trips to Colorado! The hikes up the mountains with shorts and tea shirt and falling chest high in the snow while getting sunburn with Travis on my shoulder. We bought used bikes and traveled to Fort Collins stoping for one of OJ's favorite drinks. Root beer floats! He did love his Icecream! He scared the pants off us taking his Alfa Romeo up and down the mountain with less than perfect brakes having to downshift to slow us on the curves. I am glad the kids had the last seveal years with him close to home. I know that it meant the world to him. He's in a much better place now.

As the family puts together pictures of their dad, especially in their younger years, he did expose them to a lot of Mother Nature. There were a lot of camping and hiking trips. Ask Uncle Bill, Uncle Jim, and Uncle Pat. He favorite response to their question "are we there yet?" was "it's just around the corner"! A few miles later we may be there!!!!! Unfortunately when he came back to live in Michigan his cancer was already starting. But he had a special bonding with his children who gave their all to see that he was comfortable and well taken care of. Okla had very caring and loving children that put their dad ahead of themselves. You are wonderful, my children. I am glad that Papa and I had the opportunity to have Okla share in all of the special holidays and other family dinners and even had a chance to have Grady Peninger, his MSU wrestling coach, have dinner with us too. Know that your daddy is now with his Heavenly Father and know that he is proud of all of you. Love, Mom and Papa
