R. Stout Obituary

R. Jean Stout Mason R. Jean Stout was born on May 20, 1936, in St. George Utah to a large family, moved to Salt Lake City, and graduated from South High School. Jean received her B.S and M.S. from the University of Utah, moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she received her PhD in tropical ecology from the University of Michigan while working in Costa Rican streams. Jean moved to East Lansing to work as a Research Associate in the Department of Entomology at Michigan State University (MSU) until her retirement. From 1984 to 1994, she worked on federal grants in Minnesota and in Dickenson County, Michigan. After retiring from MSU, Jean got her real estate license and worked with Vision Real Estate for several years. Jean spent the last years of her life with her husband, William Cooper at their home in Mason, Michigan. She was a life long outdoors woman, animal lover, and gardener. Jean enjoyed sharing her love of science, including appreciation for critters of all shapes and sizes, and discussing her liberal political perspective with family and friends. Jean passed at Sparrow Hospice House in Lansing on April 26, 2010, of melanoma and will be missed greatly by her large network of family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Dr. William Cooper; her son, Jason Vandermeer (Erin Black); step-son, Scott Cooper (Amy Cooper); step-daughter, Jill Cooper (Franc Vanderven); sisters, Shirley and Lorraine; brother, Kent; and black lab, Lilly. A special person and friend who shared her love of food, gardens, knowledge, and humor everytime we met. Generous, classy and intelligent, I will miss her greatly, but will remember her warmly and often with much love.

Jean was a good friend and precious person to me. She knew life was fragile and used her last year embracing every moment. God bless her soul.

I am so sad for your family's loss. Reading this lovely tribute makes me feel sad that I didn't know her. She was obviously a very special woman.
