We have so valued the time that Soror Canady spent in stewardship to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Now she has claimed her reward of eternal rest and we thank God that our paths crossed and give testimony to her faithfulness in service to and advocacy for humankind.
Her legacy will live in all of us but especially her granddaughter whose quiet strength mirrors her "Granny".
Until we meet again, Soror....

I worked with Hortense years ago at LCC while I was a student, before that Dr. Canady was my family dentist. Hortense was always the most pleasant person to work with. We shared many stories. I never forgot her. Funny, the thing I remember the most--her great skin. Her face was gorgeous! We use to laugh about our oily skin would hopefully keep us wrinke free. My deepest sympathy goes out to the family, she was an amazing woman!

To the Canady family, May God comfort you in the loss of your dear love one, Hortense Canady. She has been source of inspiration for me as a women, wife and community leader. Growing up as a young Debutante seeing her as a founding La Mere always made me proud to know that I would not of had the opportunity to be presented to society without her efforts. It is very rare that you have the opportunity to be in the midst of those that have paved the way for you. I now treasure even more the moments that we shared togther at past Cotillions. It is because of her pioneering spirit that African American women are able to service in leadership roles in the Lansing community today. Thank you for sharing Hortense with us.

I thank God for Mrs. Canady! She was one of my Aunt Janet's dearest friends. Mrs. Canady was the only VBS teacher at Friendship Baptist Church in 1956 who gave us graham crackers with chocolate milk! Her dedication to the Les Meres and Debutante Clubs was fantastic~I'm glad she made us go to charm school! My experience as a DST "Pyramid" was the springboard for Mrs. Canady's attention to the process of pledging. And it was her membership on the Lansing Board of Education that prompted me to run for and be elected to the Lincoln Consolidated Schools Board of Education in Ypsilanti. The person I became is a reflection of her wisdom, intellect, and community spirit. I will be forever grateful for having known Mrs. Canady! Blessings and love to Dr. Canady, Joe, Alexa, Allen and Mark!
