John Bevers Obituary

John Denzil Bevers LUBBOCK-Judge John Denzil Bevers, 92, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, in Lubbock. He was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Wellington, Texas, to John and Coda Bevers. He moved to Lubbock in 1941 and joined the U.S. Army in 1943. He was in a tank battalion, trained in intelligence to gather information on the Nazi's, was in the 7th Army during the Battle of the Bulge, on rescue missions and served in Austria as part of General Pattons 3rd Army. After his service in the Army he attended Texas Tech, graduating in 1949 then went to the University of Texas where he received his Law Degree in 1952. After graduation he returned to his hometown, Wellington, Texas, where he practiced law with Collingsworth County. In 1956 Denzil moved to Lubbock to continue his law practice. He married Bobbie Knodel on Nov. 1, 1958. In 1968 he was appointed as a Judge in the County Court of Law #2 where he worked until his appointment as Judge in the 72nd District Court, serving Lubbock and Crosby Countys. Denzil served here until his retirement in 1988. Judge Bevers is survived by his daughter, Heidi Bevers of Lubbock; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Dan and Douglas. Visitation will be today, Jan. 31, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. in the Abbey Chapel of Resthaven Funeral Home followed by burial in Resthaven Memorial Park Mausoleum. It was always a pleasure to be in Judge Bevers court. A good judge with a great sense of humor. Also a veteran who served his country during WWII.
