CARLTON HEBERT Obituary

STARKS -- Carlton Arthur Hebert, 90, of Starks, died peacefully in his home in Starks, on Sept. 16, 2012. He was born on July 17, 1922, in Skowhegan, the son of Peter Hebert and Rosa (Turcott) Hebert.

He married his wife of 63 years, Beula Farrand, on April 14, 1949. For more than 60 years, they lived and raised a family in the blue house on the corner in Starks.

He enlisted in the Army in September 1940 and was selected for advanced training as a radar operator. He was also trained as a sharpshooter and attended a tank destroyer school for detection of mines and booby traps. He was stationed at Hickam Field, Hawaii, and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. He later served at Fort Hood, Texas, as a training instructor.

After the war, Carlton started a family logging company that included his father and three of his brothers.

He later worked for several wood mills in central Maine and retired from Woodtek Inc. in Anson as the superintendent of maintenance. Carlton was a self-taught engineer, and held a state of Maine boiler engineer's license. He continued his lifelong love of forestry by managing his own woodlots and in November 2007 was named the Small Woodlot Owner of the Year by the Somerset County Soil and Water Conservation District.

He served the community in many ways. He was the chairman of the founding board of the planning board in Starks, served on the local school board, and was influential in the local Democratic party for a number of years. He was a Boy Scout leader, and for several years taught boiler classes for Kennebec Valley Vocational and Technical College in Fairfield.

Carlton had many diverse hobbies. A skilled cabinet maker, he crafted many pieces for his family. He received a patent for a wood furnace design. For many years he kept a large garden, the produce of which was shared with friends and family. He was known for his quick wit, and enjoyed playing chess, card games, and Scrabble, as well as weekly games of golf or pool with his brother, Norman.

He is survived by his wife, Beula, of Starks; his five children, Errol Hebert, and his wife, Sun Ja, of Portsmouth, N.H., Vicki Stevens and her husband, Alan, and Kerry Hebert and his wife, Jennifer, of Starks, Pegeen McConnell and her husband, Malcolm "Steve," of Wiscasset, and Shawna Kelly and her husband, Hugh, of Orono; 10 grandchildren: Errol's children, Marcia, Mark and Tracy, Kerry's children Edward and Joshua, Pegeen's children, Lucas and Jodianne and Shawna's children, Jacob, Peter and Marie; as well as four great-grandchildren; and four siblings: Kenneth Hebert, Norman Hebert, Phyllis (Hebert) Daigle and Evelyn (Hebert) Lawhead. He will also be missed by nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends. He was predeceased by five siblings: Joseph F., Richard, Edward, Doris (Hebert) Pope and Mary Hebert.

A memorial service will be arranged at a future date. In lieu of flowers, Carlton's children request that donations be made to the Starks Enrichment and Educational Society, 57 Anson Road, Starks, ME 04911; or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 40 Maple St., Madison.
