She was born in Worcester, Mass., Jan. 23, 1919, the daughter of George and Laina (Haapala) Malm.
She was a 1936 graduate of North High School in Worcester, and a 1940 graduate to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she was a member of the Phi Zeta Sorority.
In 1941, she married Joseph Hasenfus of Needham, Mass. Mrs. Hasenfus lived with her family in Kents Hill, Maine, for 25 years. She was a social worker for the state of Maine.
She enjoyed swimming and was a competitive swimmer in high school. She swam in several 3-mile ocean races in her early 20s. She also enjoyed canoeing and mountain climbing with her husband and children when they were young.
Mrs. Hasenfus is survived by three children, Carol Yadeta of Keene, Dr. Nancy Hasenfus and her husband, Dr. Robert Anderson, of Bath, Maine, and Eric Hasenfus and his wife, Cheryl, of Rome, Maine; and seven grandchildren, Sarah Yadeta of New York City, N.Y., David Yadeta of Washington, D.C., Gwendolyn Anderson and Rachel Anderson, both of Bath, Adam Hasenfus of Wilmington, N.C., Leah Smith and her husband, Lenny, of Wilmington, and Shauna Myles and her husband, Ryan, of Scarborough. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Hasenfus, of Bath, and formerly of Needham, Mass. Her husband, Joseph Hasenfus, and her son-in-law Baheru Yadeta, died earlier.
Burial in Kents Hill Cemetery, Readfield, will be private.
