Donald grew up in Farmingdale and lived there most of his adult life. He worked for the Carpenters Union, Teamsters Union and the Laborers Union. He was a jack of all trades and a master of them all until he was forced into retirement from an arm injury.
Later on in life he decided to follow his farming dreams and moved to Alabama. While there he missed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren so much that, recently, he was in the process of moving back to Gardiner, Maine. He was a proud, loving, stubborn and old fashioned man. He paid his own way for everything or he had none. He had few enemies. When he made up his mind to do something, he did it well and to his only satisfaction.
Donald is survived by his six children who he loved dearly, Joan Petit and husband Scott of Bradenton, Fla., and formerly of Maine, Tina Gray and husband Peter of Windsor, Donald Durgin Jr. of Washington, Donna Tobey and husband Warren of Windsor, Carlene Keithan of Augusta, Keith Durgin and wife Mary of Somerville; his lifelong companion V. Leanne Hjerstedt of LaFayette, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren who will remain in his heart forever; two sisters, Rita Madison and Phyllis Powell; two brothers, Wayman Durgin and Daniel Durgin; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Donald was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Elwood Durgin, and four sisters Margaret Burnham, Helen Markham, Mildred Clifford and Barbara Moody.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 30, at 10 a.m. in the Litchfield Plains Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Janus Supported Living Services 276 Razorville Road, Washington, ME 04274 or to a charity of your choice.
