He was employed by the state of Maine at the Augusta Mental Health Institute for 36 years, retiring in 1985. Sandy enjoyed fishing, hunting, race cars and family get-togethers. He was a lifetime member of the Gardiner Sportsman Association and the National Rifle Association
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Clarence and Ronald McKechnie; a son, Everett Chapman; and a great-grandson, Peter Thornton Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sandra Morven McKechnie, of Randolph; his daughters, Sandra Ellis and husband Patrick of Chelsea, Caroline Markham of West Gardiner, Cindy Pare and husband Gerard Jr. of Litchfield, Harriet Nadeau and husband Norman of Jay, and Sylvia Thornton of West Gardiner; his sons, Jeffrey McKechnie and wife Karen of Vassalboro, and Steven Trask and wife Janice of Augusta; sisters Earlene Emmons of New Hampshire and Paulette Cram of Manchester; his former wife, Barbara L McKechnie, of Pittston, and her family; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A funeral service will be held Friday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, Hasson Street, Farmingdale. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to your favorite sportsman activity.
The family would like to thank the medical staff and doctors at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for their excellent care and concern.
