He was born in Greenbush, Mich., on Jan. 29, 1936, the son of William and Velma (Brooks) McGillis. He grew up in Greenbush and entered the U.S. Army in 1959, serving until 1961. Ray met his wife June Severance in 1960 and they were married in 1966. He worked for several years at Camp Keyes and later at the University of Maine at Augusta until his retirement in 2005.
Mr. McGillis enjoyed hunting, fishing, flea markets and yard sales. He and June just loved to be on the go.
Ray is survived by his wife, June; his son, Raymond McGillis, and his wife, Tanya, of Augusta; his daughter, Dixie Ellis, and her husband, David, of Augusta; his stepsons, Harold Pierce, and his wife, Brenda, of Richmond, and Irwin Pierce, of Augusta; his brothers, Ted McGillis, and his wife, Erleen, of Oregon, and Clinton McGillis and his wife, Ruth, of Michigan; sisters Georgie Payett of Michigan, Donna Ridenour of Michigan, and Wanda Hall of Michigan; and his special grandchildren, Raymond Ellis and Virginia McGillis.
There will not be any services at this time.
