Susan Howe Obituary

Susan L. Howe, 66, a resident of Vassalboro, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2010, after a lengthy illness.
She was born on Jan. 12, 1944, in Norwood, Mass., the daughter of Arthur Wentworth and Doris E. (Jaquith) Dean. She graduated with honors from Canton High School in 1961. For the past 12 years, until July 2009, she was employed by the Patenaude Dental Office in Augusta. She was a gifted gardener with the greenest thumb and enjoyed bowling. She loved to vacation with her family, whether it was camping a few towns away or a cruise on the ocean with her husband. She also enjoyed playing with her grandchildren whenever possible. A wonderful home cook, her food won much praise, and her apple pie was award-winning.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Edward L. Howe; her children, Arthur Howe and his wife, Debbie, of Monmouth, Rachel MacArthur and her husband, Derek, of Vassalboro, April Gostin and her husband, Bruce, of Waterville, and Eddie Howe Jr. and his partner, Aaron Nichols, of San Jose, Calif.; her sisters, Virginia Giorgi and Mary Ellen Dean; her brothers, Paul Dean and Malcolm Dean; and her grandchildren Jennifer MacArthur, Daniel Gostin and Aaron Cadwell. She is predeceased by her granddaughter Cassandra Dee Howe.
A service will be held to celebrate the life of Susan on Saturday, April 3, at 1 p.m., at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St. in Oakland, with a gathering to follow at the Gostin residence, 30 Silvermount St. in Waterville. In lieu of flowers, donations to assist with funeral expenses may be sent to Edward L. Howe Sr., 503 Nelson Road, Vassalboro, ME 04989.

Growing up with April as my best friend, Sue was like my second Mom. I will always have the fondest memories of her from her incredible loving nature to walking in the house on Grove Street to find her red-eyed in front of a game of Tetris daring us to challenge her. She was and always will be the coolest Mom. I miss you dearly.

I loved Sue from the moment I meet her. She was a wonderful person. When I think of Sue I can see her smiling. She had a great smile. I will miss you Sue.

I try to often think about how wonderful my life is and has been, and it's always been something I've attributed to my fantastic upbringing and, in particular, the parenting of my mother and father. While I will miss my mother dearly, and wish I could get just a little more time, I feel there is a lot about her life to celebrate and appreciate. She is, and will forever be, my hero and inspiration. Rest in peace, mom. You'll be missed.

My knowledge of Susan is only through her daughter, Rachel. It is enough to know that she was well-loved by her family, and leaves a legacy of great character, courage, and generosity. My sincerest sympathy and admiration to her family, who loved her limitlessly and cared for her fiercely to the end.
