Kathleen Preston Obituary

Kathleen F.
Preston, 99
YARMOUTH -- Kathleen F. Preston died on Easter morning, April 24, 2011, one month after celebrating her 99th birthday. Known as Kay, she was born the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Carney) McNerney in Ayer, Mass., on March 22, 1912.
Kay earned her BS in English from Simmons College in Boston in 1933. She married Paul G. Preston Sr. and moved to Princeton, Mass., where they raised their three sons until the family moved to Darien, Conn., in 1951.
After her sons graduated, Kay returned to school and earned her MA in Education from Columbia University. She taught elementary and special education for many years in the Stamford, Conn. school system.
Upon retirement, she and Paul moved to Tobyhanna, Pa., where they lived until his death in 1990. Kay then moved back to Fitchburg, Mass., where she was active in golf, bridge, and continuing education.
In 1998, she moved to Portland and lived at The Woods at Canco until 2010, continuing her bridge playing and education through classes at the Senior College at USM and taking great joy in attending her grandchildren's performances and athletic events.
Quick-witted until the end, Kay loved reading, current events, and all forms of the arts and was an inspiration to all, especially her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her four siblings; husband; and son, Joseph F. Preston IV. She is survived by sons, P. Gilman Preston, Jr. (Anne Berg) of North Yarmouth, and F. Peter Preston (Marcia) of Cos Cob, Conn.; grandchildren, Ian Preston of NYC, Rebecca Mannion of Capetown, SA, Samantha Travis of Helen, Mont., Amanda Preston of Boston, Alexander Preston of North Yarmouth, and Peter Preston of Stamford, Conn.; as well as great-grandchildren, Matthew, Kathleen, Neve and Robert; and special extended family members, Axel and Mary Berg of Falmouth.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff at Coastal Manor in Yarmouth who took such wonderful care of Kay during the final year of her life. At Kay's request, there will be no public service. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.
