Sally Sneider Obituary

Sally Lourie
Sneider, 95
PORTLAND -- Sally Lourie Sneider of Portland passed away May 12, 2011. She was born the first child of Max and Bessie Kuvent on Oct. 13, 1915 in London, England. The family emigrated to the U.S. in 1918 and settled in Portland. She attended Portland High where she graduated as the top stenography student in the class of 1933. By the time she was 18 she was left to raise her three younger siblings and took factory work to support the family.
In 1952 she married her beloved husband Irving Lourie with whom she had two children, Ava Joy Lourie and Mark Stephen Lourie. Sally was a long time member of Temple Beth El where she sang in the choir. She was a life member of Cedars Auxiliary, Hadassah, and past president of the Jewish Community Center Woman's Club, where she performed in their many shows. She believed in being charitable and never refused a fund drive, especially request concerning children. Irving passed away in 1975.
In 1978 Sally married Allen Sneider of Biddeford and they enjoyed a life split between Florida and Maine and travelled overseas extensively. She was very fond of opera, theater, and the symphony, and she and Al attended many performances. She was an avid reader and loved to do crosswords and cryptoquips
Sally took enormous pride in her children and grandchildren, who were the loves of her life. Throughout her life her favorite times were those spent with her family.
She was predeceased by both of her husband's and all three of her siblings, Abe and Arnie Kuvent and Lillian Kuvent Nagel.
She is survived by her daughter Ava Lourie Bradley and her husband Brien of Scarborough, her son Mark Lourie and his wife Diane of Portland; and her grandchildren Brenna and Eben Bradley and Liza and Olivia Lourie; step children Sharon Canner and husband Steve of Reston, Va. and Cary Sneider and wife Liz of Portland, Ore., a niece, several nephews; and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Beth El Memorial Park on Sunday May 15, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. A reception will follow at Park Danforth 777 Stevens Ave, Portland. Please visit www.jonesrichandhutchins.com for additional information and to sign Sally's guest book.
