Ann Karter Obituary

Ann Louise (Crichton) Karter, 70
PHIPPSBURG -- Ann Louise (Crichton) Karter, 70, of Phippsburg and Osprey, Fla., died on April 29, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer in Boston, Mass.
She was born to the late Philip and Angela (Donahue) Crichton Dec. 17, 1940, in Presque Isle.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Eli; five children, Mary (Mike) Huth of Pittsfield, Mass., Elizabeth (Shawn) Murphy of Eaton, Ohio, Kate (Mike) Orroth of Davidson, N.C., John (Jennifer) Karter of Chicago, Ill., and Michael Karter of Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; siblings, Mary Crichton, Steve Crichton, Clare (Alan) Hitchcock, Peter (Jennifer) Crichton, and Angela Ellen (Chris) Delong; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ann graduated from Aroostook Central Institute in 1959. She attended the University of Maine, graduating with a BSE (English) and a Master of Arts in Teaching. While raising her children, she pursued her teaching career for 10 years. She then directed her energies to volunteer work in the various communities in which she resided.
One of her most notable accomplishments included being named to the Top Ten Women by the Ohio House of Representatives. This distinction recognized the following: Co-chair, Designer Show House 6, for the Dayton Philharmonic Women's Association; Chair of Dayton Art Institute Art Ball; and campaign chair of the Dayton Performing Arts Fund. She served on the board of the Dayton Chapter of the American Red Cross and was awarded Volunteer of the Year, Board member of the year and recipient of the 10 year service award for financial development and leadership.
She also served on the board of Carillon Park and the Dayton Ballet. Fraternally she served as president of her PEO chapter in Dayton, Ohio, and most recently as president of her chapter in Sarasota, Fla.
Throughout her life, Ann fought courageously, loved deeply and gave selflessly. For those who have had the privilege to know her, she will be missed profoundly.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, at Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 144 Lincoln St., Bath. Dear Mr. Karter, Mary and the entire Karter Family,

Ann was a remarkable woman who could engage anyone in a conversation. While only around her a few times, I couldn't help but notice that she truly listened to whomever was speaking in spite of what was going on around her. That was just one of her many admirable traits. I remember the last time I spoke with Ann; in only a few words she touched me deeply and profoundly, while comforting me. I wish I could be there to comfort you.

Much love and sympathy,

Natalie Bohan

Dear Eli and Family,

Please accept my condolences on your loss of Ann. I remember fondly the visits of the Caribou Donahues to the Mars Hill Crichtons. In the past few years, I enjoyed receiving Ann's Christmas letter, though authored by the newest grandchild, and even though it always reported more grandchildren than we had. I will miss her presence in my life, and she certainly leaves a much larger hole in your lives. Thanks Eli & family for celebrating her life; she made the most of it.

Karter Family (and especially Mrs. K’s children): I so fondly remember our youthful days of summers and at DCC, swimming, “trying” to dive, and the festivities that typically followed such Friday evening events. As children and older, we played. Mr. & Mrs. Karter (and all of our parents) watched with pride and enjoyment. With loving smiles and bewildered amazement at what we, as children, thought we could get away with, your parents gave us the freedom to have the times of our lives. I hope this sad, sad time of grief will give way to enduring memories of loving remembrance of the happy times your mother has given you as a family. I know and remember how your mother and wife have touched so many lives in so many ways through the years, and in so many communities. And so she will always. God Bless your family. With sad condolences, Scott and Libby (PEO sister) Finefrock
