Nancy Johnson Hatch
KENNEBUNKPORT -- Nancy Johnson Hatch, of Kennebunkport and Conway, N.H., died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 7, 2011, while vacationing in Florida.
Nancy was born on Feb. 21, 1924, in Boston, Mass., to Lars and Edith Johnson and grew up in Sormerville, Mass. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1944. At UNH she met George W. Hatch of Dover, N.H., and they married on Nov. 3, 1945. They first lived in Sturbridge, Mass., where Nancy taught school.
In 1949 they moved to Kennebunkport, where she and George raised four children. Nancy was a long time member of the Arundel Yacht Club, the Kennebunkport Historical Society, and the South Congregational Church, where she also taught Sunday school. The family moved to Wethersfield, Conn., in 1962, and continued to summer in Kennebunkport. Prior to their retirement, Nancy and George ran a hardware store in North Conway, N.H. During her retirement, Nancy spent winters in Conway and summers in Kennebunkport.
Nancy enjoyed reading, knitting, embroidery, puzzles, Jeopardy, traveling, and spending time visiting her children and grandchildren. She always kept closely in touch with the many friends she and George came to know over the years.
She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years in 1999; and two sisters, Ruth Johnson and Elna Smith. She is survived by a son, Peter Hatch of Kennebunk, three daughters, Betsey Church of Nelson, N.H., Paula Hatch of Kennebunkport, and Sandy Hatch, who provided loving care in the last years of Nancy's life, of Conway, N.H.; a niece, Susan Smith, and a nephew, Fred Smith. She leaves eight grandchildren, Eric and Lindsey Hatch, Erika and Sara Kling, Ann Church, Benjamin Church, Susanah Maxwell and Sarah Murphy. She also had six great- grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 27. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. www.bibberfuneral.com.
